| My 800mhz Duron running on an Elitegroup K7SEM is totally messed up. I turn it on and it loads the BIOS and then goes to Load windows XP and then goes to a memory dump the second its done loading the BIOS. At random times the computr will load into windows but then goto a BSOD with a memory dump. I tried both sticks of 128MB seperatly but still no luck. I give up in ideas at this point and I really need my baby to work, as I have very little money at this point and no job. | ||

You get what you pay for LOL. ECS has done my friends well lately though. I will not touch one myself if it cost more than $10. Possible HD boot prob, mobo about to go, or in an odd case, both mem sticks blew.

| Everyone agrees that ECS boards are crap, yet everyone seems to have one. Does anyone care what they buy or does it all come down to total cost. My old roommate had one and it sucked ass... actually he still has it and it still sucks ass, but he has it in his head that its just windows that makes his comp suck. Perhaps thats why the macs are so stable.... no crappy aftermarket incompatible hardware conflicts. ....... or maybe your ram sticks just took a suicidal love leap together | ||

| LMFAO you guys are hilarious. We'll iv done some work since I last posted. I tried diff IDE cables, different HD, different version of windows, resetting BIOS, and resetting CMOS. I think its the Processor or Motherboard at this point because the RAM works fine on different computers. And you guys are so right about ECS/Elitegroup boards sucking ****. They blow but they were all I could afford at the time because I had no job and I still have no job. Isn't that funny, poor, hence I have an elitegroup board. I laugh at my problems. Everything on that computer is sweet except the MOBO and processor. What would be a good cheap board that could run both a DURON or an Athlon XP? I would prefer to have raid but I dont need onboard anything, such as onboard LAN(because I have wireless), sound, or video, as mobos with onboard stuff generally suck **** and are slow. The specs of my dead bitch are as followed: ECS/Elitegroup K7SEM AMD Duron 800mhz /w Volcano 5 HSF 256MB PC133 SDRAM (128MB of No Name/128MB of AzenRam) ATi Radeon 7500 64MB DDR Creative 5.1 Soundblaster Platinum /w Livedrive Altec Lansing ATP4 Speaker System A Panasonic Floppy Drive 2*60GB 5400RPM Maxtors 1*40GB 7200RPM Maxtors LG 16x10x40x CD Burner Enermax 350watt Dual Fan Whisper /w Automatic Fan Control Custom Painted Case /w "Sky Blue" exterior and "Metalic" Interior Left Case Side Window 1 Green CCFL 1 Blue CCFL 1 Aqua Blue Neon Glowlight NEC MultiSync 3FGx Monitor(please dont laugh shes had a good 6 years of life and is still running perfectly except for burn marks on her from a few years back when I had a fire in my bedroom )Any help as to how my MOBO and/or processor are dying, or hw to fix the problem is welcomed as I'm very striken for cash at this point and I need it to run as all I have is my crappy SONY laptop to work with at the moment and it can't do **** and takes 5 minutes to start up. POS SONY. | ||

| soyo all the way, my last 3 were all soyo's and i have yet to ever have one problem with any of them, there not that expensive and the majority of the midline boards come with a built on raid controller....love em to death will never buy anything else however tho my friend swears by msi, however tho he has had one capacitor blow on one of his 6 boards and took the cpu down with it...but besides that he says they work flawlessly | ||

| I too will swear by my SOYO. I have the KT333 Ultra Platinum, my friend just got the KT333 Dragon Lite, and another buddy of mine has the Dragon Super (KT266-A Chipset) (i think its "super" cant remember) They arent the greatest for OVERclocking, but hell, im not really into that anyway. mine is fine at stock (or close to, hehe) | ||

| Thanks guys. Hey, does anyone know what slot/socket type the new AMD Opterons or whatever the **** their called are going to use? Also did anyone hear about the AMD Moron or whatever? I find that funny as hell. I am probably going to replace the Duron at the same time as I replace the semi-dead MOBO, but I don't want to buy something thats technology is already obsolete, coughATHLONXPcough, but there really isnt anything else out there and I aint forking out $$$$$$$$ for Intel. I need something that can run any games in the future for atleast a year as I am money stricken and rarley upgrade. This is a good time to upgrade though as my computer is pooped out. I really would be glad if the new AMD processors worked on slot/socket A. That would be sweet but can anyone tell me if they do or not? It would be easy for me to upgrade in the future. Thats what I planeed on doing with my K7SEM, pop out the Duron and pop in an XP. Oh well, it failed. MWHAHAHAH DIE ECS/"Not Very Elite"Elitegroup. ECS/Elitegroup boards are like cheaper than the boards that are in ****ing E-Machines probably. | ||

| The Opteron/Hammer CPUS will use a 768 pin socket (something near that, well over 700 - read on THG). You might be thinking of the Morgan Duron core, or the Barton XP core/cache. Morgan is the ancient Duron core - waaaay out-dated. The Barton will be the bridging gap between the XP and the Hammer, with a 333 (166 DDR) mhz FSB, and a 512 kB L2 cache. Well, considering the Barton is a long way off, and you have a shytty mobo the way it is, just get a cheap KT333 mobo and an XP 1600 and overclock the hell out of it - not very difficult. I apologize for not remembering the exact motherboard, but the Abit kx7-333 or something like that is supposed to be the overclocking tank. The only two chip producers that produce chips of a gaming quality are AMD and Intel. And why the hell were you buying an ECS board? Reviews, reviews - must reads. | ||

| Oh okay. Yeh musta been messing them two up. Is the 800mhz Duron a Morgan Core? I think it is but I'm not sure. Also, yeh I havn't been to Tom's Hardware for a while. Thanks man. Um is the KT333 expensive? I need something well under $200 Canadian but I would like to have RAID as I have like 6 HD's which at the time being had to constantly unplug and swtich around when needed. Thanks alot. About the Elitegroup Board, yes I know their ****, I knew at the time I bought the computer too, but I had no money what soever. I got the Duron, HSF, MOBO, Towe, RAM, and PSU all for $300 Canadian which is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. All I had to get was a HD and a floppy drive, which I both already had and I was up and going. I also already had a 5.1 Live Drive Platinum and an ancient GF256 32DDR too! Hehe, still have that old ****er but its in my sis's computer. I got a brand spanking new Radeon 7500 64DDR in mine. | ||

| HOLY FLAMING GUANO! 6 HD's in one comp, that is awesome! Sorry about my misunderstanding you. I will check on the Duron being a Morgan. Also, I will goto Newegg, and try to find the SiS motherboard that allows you to run DDR or SDRAM (I do believe Newegg ships to Canada, if not, smack me) I'll do some price conversion and get back here ASAP. | http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...ion=13-150-019 - that is a link to a mobo that allows you to run SDRAM. 55 USD. Shuttle manufacturer! Not sure that has RAID, pretty sure it doesn't.If you want to get a KT333 mobo you would need new ram as well - that is one reason I didn't link a KT333. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...103-303&DEPA=1 AMD XP 1600+. 54 USD. Hope that helps, sorry about not having the Canadian $ conversion. EDIT - after reading your other posts about ram, here is some - 512 megs Micron PC2100 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...145-005&DEPA=1 - 130.00 USD. Also, here is a KT333 mobo, as I now understand you want to upgrade ram (I assumed you wanted to save as much money as possible before). http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...ion=asus+kt333 - the last motherboard on that list should work great - 116.00 USD. You better be careful with that "AMD SUCKS!" - it can get you in trouble ![]() Last edited by loodamaris; 27-October-02 at 04:39 AM.. | ||

| If you end up getting a new board......you can get lots of KT333 boards for well under $200. Go to www.ncix.com Canadian site with decent prices. The soltek board is supposed to be awesome (albeit not a great oc'er) and can be had for $130 CDN. Keep in mind, if you go that route you will need new ram as well! | ||

| Okay, whoa good prices! Is shipping expensive? I know I'd need new ram. My whole intent was even if my MOBO and/or processor didn't break was to get a new MOBO and Processor for christmas. This just allows me to get sweeter stuff too hehe. I would love to change to DDR266 or DDR333 because this SD RAM is **** and my dads puter has DDR266 and its xp1800+ and its pretty awsome. He has SOYO Dragon (I think its a Dragon Plus but im not sure) but I cant get that hence the expensive price and the old SOYO is discontinued. Also, I read the THG on the new hammerhead, now all my thoughts are cleared up. Damn 756 pins is a **** load lot of pins. My Old K6 laptop, which i still have unfortunatly(****ING SONY) has like 200 pins. Sweet Jesus thats alot of pins. Almost fully pins. I think I am giving AMD one last chance to smarten up before I change to Intel. They have screwed me over twice now, once with the K6, and once with the Duron. They are both **** and are painfully slow. I swear my sisters P2 233 runs faster than my K6-2 550mhz mobil processor(isnt really mobile just a desktop processor in a socket. why the **** did they design a laptop with an actual socket without just sodering it onto the MOBO like ur supposed to?!?), and my Brothers old P2 400mhz runs faster than my 800mhz Duron. AMD SUCKS but its all I can afford. HEHE. | ||

| Well, I have my perdy Duron infront of me right now and she looks okay and smells okay. The MOBO is a diferent story, she reeks of something burnt, but the weird think is that she loads the bios but then when u load anything other than DOS she fails. The MOBO has only a tiny bit of visual damage where my screwdriver slipped when I was putting the HSF on for the first time when I got the Machine a year ago, but that didn't affect the machine cuz it worked for a year until it died so it couldn't have been the cause. The ominiously weird thing is that I bought the parts for the machine on October 24th 2001 and the machine died on October 25th 2002. Thats so ****ed up if you ask me. 1 year and 1 day, holy **** its appocolypse. LOL. | ||

im gonna have to disagree on that one, ive pu a ECS K7S5A in a friends comp for about a year now, and have never had a single issue with it. Granted these boards are low on features, and not at all overclockable. But for the OEM/low end user market they where meant for they are very good at what they do and extremely stable. As for a new KT333 board you can pick up the MSI KT3 Ultra ARU through Directron.com for 109$, and i think GK has a coupon code for PR members to get 10 bucks off that board since he reviewed it. great board too. (i belive directron ships to canada too)
