Unhappy built 1st comp, no luck

ok, i built my first comp saturday and it was goin good. all the physical work was done, i started it up, and it ran the bios, i adjusted them and then i started to install winxp. all went good till it stopped installing at 29%, like it'll stick on that percent. i thought it was the ram cuz i was using ddr333 on a ddr266 mobo and so i switched it with ddr266 but that didnt work. could this be due to a faulty mobo? i dont get how it could because if the mobo can install the first portion of xp why couldnt it install the last? a new mobo comes tomorow, if that duznt work you think its the hdd? and if the hdd isnt it, what else is left?!?! thnx

the obvious way to go about troubleshooting this problem is to go through step by step. Bad CD? Glitchy CD ROM drive? IDE cables? etc etc, dont just jump straight to OMG ITS MY CPU!!! ****!! haha Ive had many bad XP copies not install all the way, try a different media, like Maxell maybe....

When you boot the new board make sure all the settings in the bios are on the safest and most stable setting. Plenty of time to tweak it later. You are installing on an NTFS partition I assume.

its either an oem or retail, i kno its legit, not some .iso. can someone tell me how it could be the motherboard if the mobo can install the first 28% on xp and then just stop?

It may be at a point in the installation where it is attempting to access a hardware device or load a device driver.
