Unhappy I pulled a Boo-Boo

Guys, I am down for a few days. Saturday I was rerunning my water-cooling gear, swapping out the radiator and changing my tubing from 1/4" to 3/8" and while pushing a length of tubing onto the CPU water block I heard a bad noise. The "crack" that no one wants to hear.

Well, the system wouldn't post and fearing that I had cracked my mobo, I swaped it out for an loder KT133A MSI board with the D-LED diagnostic array, (which is a very nice MSI feature that all mobos should have) and the LED array came up all RED.

All RED on the D-LED means a bad CPU so I guess I crushed the core. I examined it and don't see any visual damage, but I have order an XP1800+ anyway. It should be here around Wednsday.

In the meantime I am down at home and will have to keep up from work only, I just hope my diagnosis is correct and it isn't the mobo.

Choos

Dude, that is rotten!

I hope the proc was not anything too current!

I push tubing on and off my block all the time while it is mounted, and everytime I think " I am playing with fire here".

So far I have been lucky!

The Z4 is such a terrible pain in the a$$ to mount that the risk of crushing the core, or having bad cpu contact far outweighs the risky tube change practices!

I have not had that block off since the original mount, and if and when I take it off I will likely not put it back on!

Anyhow, hope you are up and running soon bro.

I hate putting on and taking off my Maze block. Because it has a spring/nut tensioner, I can never tell exactly how much pressure I'm putting on the CPU. Also, I have to be real careful that I tighten them evenly or it will be canted on the core.

I ended up cutting some reinforced tubing and attaching it to the block and used connectors to put the normal tubing on. That way I didn't have to screw with the actual block. I have some Tygon tubing arriving Wednesday so I shouldn't ever have to worry about replacing it again.
