| by Grills, I'm not talking about your BBQ grill, I'm talking about your Fan grills Yes, I know that it hurts when a 5600 RPM fan blade hit and cut into you, but do we really need it? Now bear with me... I'll get to why I started this thread... heres a list of Pros and Cons for grills: Pro: -Looks good -Protects fingers Cons: -Costly ($12 CAD each, and if you got 6 fans...) -Reduce Airflow -Create noise Here;s what I think Grills are used for: TO PROTECT FINGERS!!!! Here's my ? Question: why da &$%^ do we need grills inside our comps??? For example, why would we need a grill on our PSU???, mine has two, I took both of them out... I mean, it;s not like if you're going to stick your hands inside your comp when it's operational.... and people spend like $14 on thermal paste to get better thermal conduction, when you could probably improve yout CPU fan preformance by removing the grills off that CPU fan. I started wondering when i saw Johnny E's rig, he's got soo many unessasary grills!!! (not that it ain't a nice rig) Basically, it boils down to this: Why do we need grills inside our computers when we don't stick our fingers in it when it's operational Note: I fully support the use of using grills on fans externally (ie. Blowholes) | ||

| some ppl do have their hands in a case while its on (for example jumping the CMOS when ocing). i personally don't want fan grilles inside my case (for looks). its just a matter of preference. and the reason y its so bad to stick ur finger in a fan is that u'll prolly break off a blade or 2. | ||

*cough* Clown *cough* Normally I don't like grills, but for some it is a must have. I can think of a few times I almost totally removed a finger or 2 with my huge server fan...and there was that time the cat almost got sucked in.. ![]()

| hmmm i guess i mean an 80 or 90mm fan can't really hurt u.....i never knew that bigger plastic fans could take off a finger.... edit: ok i admit it i've never oced or used the cmos jumper so i don't knw anything bout that. but there are other reasons to have ur hands in the computer whle its running. i have had the side panel off my case while it was running to reach in and pop off the front bezel. Some people have terribly messy wiring (no-one around here). If a stray wire stopped the CPU fan, there could be trouble. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Why you ask? Well, if some pimps have little pimps it will protect their little fingers. For us single pimps, it looks cool and chics dig it. Why do I have a huge motorcycle that gets worse mileage than some cars? Because I like how it looks and it brings me enjoyment. Computers are modded with a sense of passion that the rice boys mod their cars. They have so much useless crap on their cars but it belongs to them and it is what makes them happy. Some grills are on computers for safety, some grills are just there to look pimp ![]() | ||

| Lokie's Personal WU-Hoe | Another reason would be pets or children. Alot of us have some curious beings running around our houses so it wouldn't be good to have fans that little fingers can stick into. Putwig's right about the wires. I have alot of stray wires in the top of my case where the blowhole is and I sure wouldn't want one of those just popping loose out of the spots I pushed them into and then doing something I don't even want to think about that. BTW, I have a grill on the underside of my blowhole(inside the case) and not one on the outside. I also don't have any grills on window fans since I just like the look of them like that. I do however have the modders mesh in the front of my case where the dual 92mm intakes are. I'd like a custom 120mm grill for the blowhole, but that ended up being too expensive so I'll just have to wait. | |

| hmmm, you got a point there putwig.... here's my responce 1) CLEAN UP YOUR f00king wiring... as ALL respectable P.I.M.P.S should... I mean, my case is soo clean, it looks wireless..lol...and I don't mean I just round the cables and leave it there. I actually STOW (some people just get rounded PSU wires and rounded IDE cables, then leave them hanging around everywhere) them away. I mean, after I rounded all my wires I take time to hide them, like shoving them into my extra HD "holder" or pushing them where you can't see them 2) I don't think any cable is "unflexible" enough to stop a CPU fan.... and besides, mine is a TMD fan, so it has a ring around the blades, so it's impossible to stop it...hee hee.. and for all of you NOT useing TMD fans, then I still think it's highly unlikly that wind inside your case might move the PSU (most likely wires to be stuck) wires, since all cable wires are T H I C K , and pretty immobile/unflexible BTW: yes, a 5600 RPM (espeacially 60mm-72mm, cuase commonly the smaller the fan, the faster it has to turn, or it creates no airflow which defeats the purpose of the fan in the first place) can cut you pretty bad **looks at scar on finger*** but I only cut myself cause I was experimenting with the fan.... would you believe the Aeroflow has a H U G E gyroscopic effect??? | ||

did you guys forget to read that part? I said I fully support the use of grills externally, not the fans inside the computer (ie. PSU, CPU) I agree it looks good if the grills was on the outside.. but IMHO it'll look serious wack if it's on the inside...

I had tight wiring in my old case, but when I removed the side, a wire got trapped in a fan, split the wire, and nearly fried my mobo. We do these things because of Murphy's Law. Anything that can happen will happen.

| good point that's a good reason for getting grills on your CPU I guess but me? I'll never use grills muahahahhah....**my wires can't get trapped in CPU fan cause I use TMD fan..... and they have a ring around the blades, so wires can't get trapped between the blade and the "thing surrounding the blades" hee hee good point kayin | ||

| Fan grills are a good thing, i have a friend named Lee he put his finger in a 92mm Vantec torrnado, took his finger half off. This was on the inside of the case. Also FatsoBob has ruined his case temp sensors when they got sucked into a un-grilled fan. They may not look cool but they have a purpose.I don't have any fan grills in my case but I have clean wires and easy access to everything and im water-Cooled. Well this is a weird forum topic but i think I have contributed. | ||
