X-bit labs - Meet Intel Wolfdale: Core 2 Duo E8500, E8400 and E8200 Processors Review

Quote:
All dual-core processors from AMD are slower than the new Core 2 Duo E8000 series, which automatically ousts them from the $150+ price segment, where IntelÂ’s dual-core solutions will now become the only player.

Another Nail in the AMD coffin.

I'm still buying on the other side for competition.

I'm saving up for one of the core 2 quads. I haven't owned an Intel since the P3 1ghz days. It's gonna be a change going back.

Has there been any sort of "concrete" pricing information on the Wolfdales yet?

Money is not going to be that much of an object when I get home, but I would still like to be able to save as much moolah as possible, while still being able to build a relatively future-proof system (to last me at least 2-3 years)...

Yorkfield sounds tasty, but if the E-series are any cop and I actually have some money by then I might downgrade to dual core and run 4ghz+. Which will probably be faster than my quad @ 3.5.

I just hope that:

1) They don't have that bug where they won't work with nForce 6xx boards
2) They overclock well
3) Intel doesn't have something waiting that will make these things obsolete a few months out

1) The dual cores should work in the 680 boards AFAIK.

2) I've heard of one of these running 4ghz+ on air.

3) Nehalem will be the next big thing at the end of this year, and that will require a whole new motherboard and likely DDR3 as well.

I'm looking forward to these Dual Cores too, it would be nice if Intel had made one with a 10x multiplier though. I've also been hearing that the non extreme edition 45nm Quads O/C pretty poorly. If E8400's are £100 and I can get 4.5GHz out of it then I'll get one.

The 8500 has a higher multiplier, so it's supposedly better for OC. And also they need a top end product that they can slap a premium price on.
