Unhappy Oops - Missed Oil Change

I'm hoping to get my bike back on the road in the Spring, as I haven't ridden it in nearly 2 years now due to not being able to afford the insurance & other costs of riding it legally...

It's a 1982 Honda CX500B (modded, naturally ), but at least it's a bike, & the joys of out accelerating just about everything on the road & outcornering things that should be able to p155 all over it, if the rider knew what they were doing, are not to be underestimated.

Its' official 0-60 time is 5 seconds, but I've found it's more like 4 if you start in 2nd gear so there's only one gear change to 60 ... so you can see there's a certain amount of fun to be had there

But anyway, I digress ... I knew the oil & filter change was overdue & would need doing (along with a few other things), but I wasn't prepared for just how overdue it was.

Normally I'm very good about doing these things on time, but in this case, I made a major oopsie - I just found a note of when I last did it: 8th October 1996. Oops

Well, in my defence I did check it regularly ... it still hardly looks used - the advantage of a cold blooded V twin with a truck sized sump on it, I guess.

Reminds me, I'd best get the ZR out next warm-ish day for a blat.

I don't winterize the bike here, but it does go a month or so between rides in the winter time.

I knew someone with a CX Turbo once, he swore by it, but it was a funny looking little bugger...

It was worth putting £30 ($45) 's worth of oil in it after all

To be fair - it's more like 4 & a 1/2 - I just found a receipt for an alternator backplate dated May 1997, I would have had to change the oil then as it's & engine out / crankcase splitting job, and it hasn't been used at all in the last 2 years. It's done 10,000 miles tops in that time as it's never been my only form of transportation, I've always had a car too & another bike.

I always checked the oil regularly, I might have forgotten to change the oil, but I'm not a complete imbecile - the oil's always been at the correct level & a good colour.

As for restarting it, you're right about the fuel system, that'll be getting all that attention ... the bike'll also be getting some oil down the bores too, & a lot of turning over before I flick the killswitch & start it, once it's properly warmed up it'll get the oil/filter change then.

my 0 to 60 time is 2.7 seconds at the drag strip. 1/4 mile time is at 10.2 seconds. at 127.6 mph now that is fast. fastest time around gratten raceway is 0:01:38.

at least you bike is the right color. YELLOW RULES.

It's a shed ... it's overweight (500lb), top heavy (you have to run the suspension really hard, otherwise you get an extra 10 degrees of lean when the suspension unloads), it's got a bendy frame, the brakes are shocking (in the dry they barely work & using them hard twice makes the friction material in the pads catch fire, in the wet there's no feel & it's too easy to lock the front up), fuel economy is ludicrous (30mpg from a 500 ?!) ...

...on the plus side it's got the best seat on any bike (it's more like a sofa), it's built like a tank, the rear light is the size of a portable TV, the torque it develops is incredible, and you can play tunes on the exhaust

Sounds like the kinda fun the old 1973 Suzuki TM 400 produced...heavy, illhandling, flexyframed, and more power than was ever needed or desired.
If you motocrossed the TM400 in the "open class" ,
It wasn't if you were gonna win or not...you'd be the fastest alright...It was a pure survivor thing, as in how Hard you were gonna crash before you crossed the finnish line....
