| Sweet! I talked to my ex-boss and we are meeting up this week to haul off some free computer stuff from a local 'bidness'. All I know is it is a bunch of stuff, some monitors, printers, and computers. The slowest CPU is supposedly a P3. And it is all FREE, should take more than one truck to haul it off... Who knows, might be some nice stuff, might be junk. Always fun to dig through a bunch of free stuff, never know what you will find. E | ||

| Kneel Fred_G and arise sir Fred of LuckWhore. Nice find though. Dumpster diving in Killeen sucks a big throbbing one. Only thing I ever found here was a 450Mhz k6-2 system. Oddly enough with 2 working dvd burners in it. Better than nothing I guess. | ||

Yeah, fastest powerbrick to do Super Pi 1M. Hell, the only powerbrick to do SuperPi 1M! That would keep him at the top of the table for months!

| Well, I saw the rooms today. One is around 6x10' filled around 4' high. The other room has a UPS I want, and about 20 CD roms... Looks like a junk haul, but you never know. We should get the rest Sat. So far I have a couple of old Dell 'puters (no SDRAM, only one HD (made in 1996 by Maxtor 'Total Customer Satisfaction' it says...) and CD ROMs and a BenQ CD burner. Looks like I will get a 15 or 17" CRT, a couple of cases and maybe a working UPS, and a few things here and there. Nothing that great, but who knows what we will find. There are a few old video cards in one box. I can probably get at 2 or three more Dell 'puters, most likely sub 1GHz and may consider running a cluster for folding if it will get a few points. Not sure how to set it up, any input would be appreciated. E We also got 2 yellow cases that kinda look like a cat? Sorry, no picture, but weird looking stuff. | If you want to get into clustering, run a Linux-based one.... mostly cuz it's free. I did a presentation on clustering last semester for my Windows Server 2003 class. Mind you I was researching clustering solutions for Windows, but I still found some interesting info about Linux clusters. Just google "linux cluster" and you can find some pretty decent tuts on how to get one up and running. On the other hand, keep your fingers crossed that you find some decent stuff among all the free junk ![]() | ||

| Thanks for the info Jobister. I would certainly use a 'Nix for a cluster. And I have plenty of time to think about it/implement. The cluster would only run when the heater is on in the house... Just out of curiosity, how would 3 or 4 or 5 900MHz machines do in a cluster as far as points? Thanks E | ||

My mum's BF worked for some business-woman and she gave him 8 x P4s PCs, each with 512mb RAM & 80gig HDDs. Old crappy grey business things, but still worth the time to mess about with. He gave them all to me for free as he had no use for them, and I condensed the components down into 4 rigs and sold them off for £100 each.

Hard to say, but my vote is that it would do great! As long as you configure the cluster as a high-Performance cluster, it should be able to crunch floating-point operations with ease.

| Well, looks like a pile of junk! Lol. You never know what you will get, had fun looking at it. Some of this stuff was extra old, 8 or so RAM slots... Old school stuff there. Looks like I got one BenQ CD burner, 9 CD drives, a P3 Dell optiplex and a P2 optiplex. P2 most likely too slow for any folding. I also got a APC Back-Ups 1200VX UPS, but the batteries are dead. Works good as a power strip. One heavy powerstrip... I might look into getting a battery for the UPS, looks like a old but good one. Dang, this UPS takes 2 batteries, both of the old ones have cracked so it is no good without new batteries. ![]() Oh well, guess you get what you pay for... ![]() E Last edited by Fred_G; 15-September-07 at 09:02 PM.. | ||

| It was about 3 years ago that I came across a similar situation with a bunch of crap computer equipment. I broke the stuff down and started selling lots on eBay; a bunch of processors, a gaggle of RAM, a herd of drives, etc... I'll be damned if I didn't make enough money to buy a seriously high end rig (at that time). There are a lot of people out there who are looking for 3rd and 4th generation gear. | ||

| T2 Looks like I only got home with one card. Dude must have snagged some of my stuff. I will see if I can find some more. The one I have is alll 3D Pro V1.21J? On the GPU it says AGP8M. Passively cooled (not even a heatsink, so pretty old). It's yours if you want it. Will let you know if I can round up some other ones. E | ||
