| Alright, here's the situation: I don't know how this happened, but all of the sudden, Windows won't let me save a jpeg file as a jpeg file. In other words, I try to save the picture (I'm just using this as an example) stuff.jpg to my hard drive, and Windows wants to save it as Untitled.bmp. I can't choose what file I want to save it as, Windows will only allow me to save it as an untitled bitmap file. This is happening to every jpeg file I try to save to my hard drive. But interestingly enough, this is only happening to linked jpeg files. Windows will display the right filename and extension to unlinked jpeg files. I don't know if this is a common problem, but I honestly don't know how to fix it. I'm considering reinstalling Windows if no one can help me. So can anyone help me? BTW, I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, in case anyone needed to know. | ||

| Chris, I'm usin' XP pro... I have the same problem... I think it's one of MS updates somewhere, but I loaded a bunch of stuff so I wasn't sure... I haven't had a chance to nail it down. (and I went back to using Linux, so if someone has a solution, It'd be good to know for later!) | ||

| I have had mine do that and it is something in Internet explorer. I found that if I clicked the link and the picture opened in the new window it would give me that silly bitmap problem. If you click the refresh button and let the page load a second time it will then let you save the picture as a jpeg. Don't have any idea why but it works for me. | ||

| although ive never had this problem, i'll throw my measly 2 cents worth in on this. what programs did you install before this situation started? have you created a restore point? if so, back up your stuff and go back. and maybe an XP reinstall might help - this is a bit if topic, but might spur a revelation (i always find that anything no matter how unrelated can help) http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum10/2171.htm . any ay, good luck , and stop using IE. | Well everyone, the problem was fixed, so thanks for your help. Ben, you hit the nail right on on the head. As it turns out, my cache was filled to the brim. So much, in fact, that Windows was having trouble deleting all those files, it would freeze. I had to delete them all manually. I thought something was peculiar when a jpeg would load up, only to have it load up all over again when I hit refresh, instead of it loading up automatically. Even so, I still can't figure out why an overstuffed cache would lead to Windows wanting to save a jpeg file as an untitled bitmap file. Maybe because a bitmap file doesn't get saved to cache? Who knows. At least the problem is solved now, so all is well again. Again, thanks for your help everybody, you saved me from having to reinstall Windows, and we all know how much we dread the day when we will come across a problem where reinstalling Windows will be the ONLY option. ![]() | ||
