Default Need Raptor As Boot Drive...

Well my wd raptor just arrived today and I want to install XP on it. I already formatted it to NTFS in parition magic.

When I boot from my XP CD it gives me the options to install xp on C or D (My 80GB IDE Storage drives) but the raptor does not show up. The BIOS detects it and PartitionMagic, the utility I used to format it, shows the drive.

How do I go about installing XP on this sata drive?

Well, 'cause it's not IDE... you'll probably need to hit F8 when it asks for 3rd party drivers for SCSI/Raid... then load up the disk that came with your mobo.

Actually, that would be F6, not F8...

you'll need a floppy drive and the SATA drivers on a floppy disk to proceed.

Boot from the CD. When you see the black screen 'Windows is inspecting your hardware' that's when you hit F6 a bunch of times. You'll then get a prompt later on to install drivers for other controllers. that's when you slam that FD into the FDD and load the Windows XP SATA driver.

Then just go from there with a regular XP install.

Have fun...let us know how it goes...damn you and your 10,000 RPM drive!!!!

I just tried a floppy drive from early 90's dell and it turns out dell floppy drives are PROPIETARY, my system would not recognize it!

I'm off to compusa for that nostalgic peice of sh!t you call a floppy drive, hopefully my next post on PR will be on that raptor.

You might want to install XP without the IDE drive plugged in. XP might make the SATA drive the last one on the chain. I dont know if that bugs you but it bothers me when it does that to me.

Vada, open Disk Management and change the drive letter. It's that simple.

Would it be possible to boot to a USB device, such as a flash disk?

Then, you can still forget the floppy...

no...because windows setup ONLY looks at drive A: for the driver files required.

Ok guys I got a hold of a floppy drive and loaded the drivers, then I proceeded to pre-installation then XP setup rebooted my computer, I hit delete, changed boot device to SATA so that I could continue installation, saved and after reboot and post it is stuck indefinitely "Verifying DMI Pool Data..."

Any thoughts?

Uh-oh. The last time MY computer stuck indefinitely on "Verifying DMI Pool Data", my bios chip was fried, and I had to get a new mobo. That' s just me.

So, ARE you running oc'd?

Well that worked! Though having windows on E: annoys me, I'm off to reinstall without the other drives in. Thanks folks.
