Word of the Day!!
doran (dor AN)
n. This is an acronym for
Doppler
range, and is the name given to an electronic device used in navigation for computing range. It is based on the principle of the "Doppler Effect", named after the Austrian physicist C.J. Doppler (1803-1853) who was the first to note the change in the frequency of sound and light waves that occurred when the distance between source and receiver varied. We have all noted the change in the pitch of a locomotive bell or horn as the train leaves or approaches us: When a train engine rushes by ringing its bell (that doesn't happen much anymore) or blowing its horn, the pitch decreases and the sound fades as the train zooms off. The
doran was developed to measure distance based on the variation of pitch resulting from the Doppler Effect, through a correlation best left to physicists.
