I'm not buying one, but before you decide for yourself, check out what this Yahoo! blogger wrote...

Am I the only one who sees a problem with these "multitools" (i.e. phone/camera/mp3 player/electric toothbrush/etc.)? Has anyone thought about the fact you are not allowed to have your phone switched on on airplanes? Sure it's no hassle for people who don't fly but for those of us who do, this whole thing is pretty retarded.

It does take getting used to (the multitools) but when you do, you'll never go back to a regular phone. Also, there is a feature called flight mode that you put on when on a airplane. It shuts off the phone but leaves everything else active.

Heh, I was just about to say that you can put it in airplane mode. I would like a phone like that but can't have one because of my line of work, I'd smash it the first week I had it.

Ahh, did not know that. But I'm still vary of them since battery life of all these things is still a problem and dividing that between 2 or more devices does not sound like a good solution

Love my Treo. In fact, I just added a new tool to it.
Got a bluetooth GPS transmitter that will sync up with it and map software.

Battery life was never really that big of an issue for me. I've used it to watch movies on planes (GR to Tucson allowed me to watch 2.5 of the three LoTR director cut movies with juice left over.)

Don't want to think about life without one... like losing a limb.

my Treo 700w you can shut the phone off and still use the PDA functionality. you lose access to the network, but you can still do everything. in fact it is off most of the time. I hate being bothered, but i like having the option to shut the phone off...

I know what you mean chrome rust, I too love the fact i can press a button tap the screen and no one can bother my game of monopoly.

I've found my 8125 can run about two days of constant use (unless you run wifi for a half hour)

The biggest advantage the iphone has on other phones, the storage, but ironically you can get a 4GB mini SD card, for around $100, which would make my phone (that cost me $80 with two year service plan) cost around $180 which is less than half the price of the 4GB one. But wait, i can get two 4GB cards, and then i'll have a phone worth 280, still just half the price of the iphone...

Its useless, and the multi touchscreen is waht pisses me off the most.

In the small 2x4 inch screen, how often are you going to set it down and touch the screen simultaniously with more than one finger (i could see using your thimbs, like a controller, but its just a way to make the thing cost way too much.)

You can get the cheap ebay 4 gb mini sd cards for around $40 shipped. They have been tested by numerous 8125 owners and all praise positive. I'm thinking of picking one up eventually. I've modded the hell out of my 8125 already. Love it!

I have a RAZR phone, the original black one, and every so often I say to myself "Self, wouldn't it be nice to have one of those slick smart phones?" And when I do, I think about it, look at what's new, and then come up with these answers....

... but self, you have not one, but 2 Palm Tungsten PDAs sitting in the cabinet that you do not use anymore and rarely did
... and they cost a lot of money
... and the data plans aren't cheap
... and would it really be able to replace your 20gb iPod? Can it run as an MP3 player for 2-3hrs a day *and* still have at least 30 minutes of talk time *and* let you play a few games between charges?
... and they are much bigger than your RAZR
... and the RAZR works just great as a phone
... and you can synch it with your Lotus Notes, Outlook, or Palm Desktop contacts and calendar

So why do you need to spend $200 on a new phone and another $40/month for a data plan? So you can check the Mets score faster? Check and respond to e-mail while walking around in Manhattan?

I dunno, I have never been able to justify a smart phone. And forget about the iPhone, the price is just insane and it still leaves a great deal to be desired.

I was planning on getting a iPhone... Was... But although I would have turned my nose up at it in light of the recent information coming out about the rate plan increase and such I had my choice made for me...

Last year when I moved up to Wisconsin I called Cingular and asked about local numbers but alas they told me they had no coverage here.... They said it would not effect my service as I am allowed to roam but I couldn't get a local number not even in a surrounding county.. so fine, I keep my Kentucky number and I just go on with life...

Well, I have been following this iPhone craze for a while now and I was on a mailing list from AT&T for any information about the iPhone... Low and behold one day I got it... I got the e-mail I was waiting for.. "iPhone release date June 29th 2007" w00t!!! I was ecstatic... I wanted that phone.. And then it happened.. I noticed my current phones started having "Off Network" on the screen instead of AT&T.. well WTH.... So I call them up just to be informed that my contract was going to be canceled as of July 27th and that I will have to find a new carrier.... NOOOOOOOO...... WHY...... WTF LADY!!! She simply stated that I was roaming to much and although they never enforced this before it is in the contract that I signed (according to her) that my contract could be terminated for excessive roaming..

Now mind you I was disappointed because I was not going to get the iPhone (at least not as soon as I had hoped) but that I had not to long ago bought an expensive Cingulat 8525 PDA phone... They could have told me this BEFORE I spent my money on that.... Well.. Long post shortened... I ended up selling my 8525 on eBay thanks to mLiv and I went through LetsTalk.com and got hooked up with t-mobile and got a Blackberry Pearl for free...

I hate you AT&T....

To me, the iPhone thing boils down to the following points . . .

I HATE cell phones, but have to carry one so my wife won't string me up (not being able to contact each other in an emergency and all that).

If I want a camera, I'll spend the money to get a camera that's WORTH carrying around, because I don't like 'snapshots'. If it's worth my time to shoot, I'll shoot it right.

If I want music, I have several ways of providing that, not the least of which is the iPod Nano that I use at work when my laptop isn't an option.

If I want to compute on the go? I bring the laptop.

If I want internet on the go? I find an online cafe. Me, I like to disconnect from time to time. It's healthy, trust me.

And pagers . . . Hate em with a PASSION. Last pager I had never even got turned on as it didn't work where I lived (We were in a cellular deadzone) and since I was at work any other time it would matter, the messages came to my e-mail inbox anyway.

Oh, and then there's that wonderful price point . . . Ain't no way someone could convince me that paying that much for a PHONE is a smart purchase. Most I'll pay for ANY phone is about $40. For business use, you might catch me shelling out at most $200, but that's for a base station that can handle a couple of lines, and maybe feeds out to different remote stations to boot.

Lastly, and this isn't an attack on Apple fans as a whole . . . just the ones I've encountered who act this way deliberately . . . I could care less about the whole 'image' thing. I get overloaded with how iAnything is a status symbol and want to start wringing the necks of the trust-fund kids I encounter who look down on me because my headphones are black. (But ya know what? They sound SOOO much better than those white 'I've got money' advertisers) The last thing I REALLY want to do is walk around carrying a device that will likely get me targeted for a mugging in the areas that I travel through.

If the iPhone's a purchase you want to make, by all means, go ahead and enjoy. I'm sure it's going to be a wonderful experience as all Apple products are. It's just not for me, and unless someone else plans to foot the bill for ALL expenses involved (Meaning, they assign me one for a job, for whatever reason), I'll likely never even handle one.

Simply my $.02. Do with as you will.

Drougnor,

You said what I was trying to say in a funny way, but you made sense.

And Twizted, the only reason I am still with AT&T is 'cause I used to work for IBM and got on their discount plan and if I change carriers I would lose that 15% discount on my plan and 20% on accessories. And they haven't screwed me bad enough yet to get me to give that up.

You know, all this talk about the iPhone makes me want to go into NYC tomorrow and personally smack each of those tards waiting on line upside their heads. Maybe, just maybe, it will smack some sense into a few of them....

Though I doubt it.

If you want to offload one of those Palm Tungstens, shoot me a PM with the model number and details. I may be needing one for work very soon. Not to mention I can use it for additional functionality on a car head unit I have been eyeing.
Thankfully, they haven't pushed a cell phone on me..... yet.

I've got a Leatherman... that's a multi-tool. I also have a phone, to make and receive calls. That's what it does, and it does it pretty darn good. If I'm stuck somewhere and need some sort of mental stimulation, I would much rather just read a book.

the ebay thing isnt going to happen. You have to buy it with a phone plan, and you have to buy it through AT&T, meaning the sale on ebay wouldn't sell, unless you change your name to nothing so when it sells anybody can have it, unless you know you'll make 600$ off the phone (you can use 175 of it to pay the early termination fee..) i don't see it happening.

i dunno, it seems that you can buy it, but if not activated within 45 days its voided as a phone...

Also says that you cannot pre pay for the data plan, you must pay per use, and you must have itunes and iphone data plan to boot.

You can port your house landline number to it, but must wait up to a week (took 2 hours for my aunt to do this with att with her regular phone)

If the iphone is DOA, you must wait for apple to send you a amiler to send it in and a up to 3 week proccessing time, + 2 weeks return time is nessesary.

That is one big book about selling a sold hype item...
