peteman (PEET mun) n. A peteman is a safecracker, in American thieves' slang. Peterman is the British form, based on British slang for safe: peter. Eric Partridge (1894-1978), the British lexiconographer who specialized in slang, in his Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, quotes from Limey Breaks In by one James Spenser, published in 1934, as follows: "A 'peter' is a safe made from tool-proof steel and usually has safety linings made from a special sort of cement." Partridge goes on to say: "? origin: perhaps because 'netted' by thieves: in allusion to Simon Peter's occupation." Partridge was ingenious in matters of troublesome derivation. This one seems far-fetched.
