Default Fighting my demon.

Well, for me this has been an interesting weekend. I have not defeated the demon yet, but I have kept him at bay. I am trying to quit smoking. I have tried many times, but still smoke. I tried the cold turkey, I failed. I have tried taking Wellbutrin, helped a bit, but still, I failed.

So I have devised my own way to stop smoking. After waking up Saturday and hacking and coughing half a lung out, I decided it was time to do something. So Saturday morning, I wrote down the time each time I lit one up. It is strange how habits form. I smoked 11 cigs Saturday. I have smoked 10 today, and am starting to not like the smell they leave in my house. Progress is being made!

I am back on the Wellbutrin (got a ton of samples). I used to smoke almost 2 packs a day. That is 30-40 cigs. I have smoked 21 in the last 2 days.

My plan is to cut back even more, then at some point just go cold turkey. My logic is that if I can cut down from 2 packs a day to less than one, it should be easier.

I think I have found the Demon's weakness. It's strength is habits. By writing down every time I smoke one, I have dealt the demon a blow.

Damn! this is not easy, but I did not expect it to be. The cravings are not as severe as they were the first day or two, I am on on day 3. And the cigs are starting to taste nasty to me! Hell yeah!

My nose is starting to wake up a little bit. Interesting.

Thanks for the support. I think I will beat this demon!

I wish you the best of luck Fred. I have been wanting to quit for a long time now and your little experiment might just inspire me to quit. Keep it up and be a role model for us smokers that want to quit )

My little experiment is working well so far. Say10, the decision to quit, or at least try is your own call. I won't judge you either way.

Some things I have noticed: My smoking hand pretty much smells like soap. WTF? I can smell things I could not before. Damn, I breathe better. And this is just after a few days. I have not gotten super sences, just getting mine back.

This demon has claws, but screw it I have a Pimp Hand...

one trick to quitting is don't make time to smoke, budget you time so weel that even 5 mins will kill something your doing, works great. Just don't start staying up all night to smoke cause all day you didn't.

Once i quit smoking, until i started drinking again, then i smoked when i drank, and eneded up drinking too much. Another time i quit, i decided that an energy drink is half the price of a pack of ciggs, so i bought on of them every time i wanted to smoke (used to smoke like a pack over three days) and i ended up drink lots of energy drinks.

All in all, i recently quit drinking caffiene. I stoped drinking coffee, then quit drinking energy drinks about three days latter, went to lots of water and more food than normal (wasn't eating s much with all the caffiene) now im goin on nearly 12 days without caffiene.

But keep up the work, aother thing to do, is get something you can do for five minutes while you would have smoked, then every time you want to smoke, do that instead.

That is a damn good idea. I have some ugly cases, fan holes cut out with clippers, that could be made much nicer.

Odd, the computer repair shops around here pretty much require the A+ cert. I took those classes a while back, but was not worried about a cert. I know a guy who passed the A+ and was too scared to format and install winXP on his laptop because he might break it...

Well, he is employed, and I am not.

I smoked 8 cigs today! My Pimp Hand is getting stronger!

Thanks for the info. But I WILL have my coffee in the morning! I have had a few beers, still only smoked 8 today!

I think I will beat this demon. Damn, 8 vs 30 or so, wow. I am going to do this. thanks for the info.

Good job! I know it can be difficult to say no to your vices, but you can do it!

3 years ago, my resistance to caffeine was so high I was taking a 2 litre of Mountain Dew to bed and drinking it to help me sleep when I woke up at night [sadly, no joke]. Finally decided it was ridicuouls, and just... stopped. Took almost a whole year of fighting cold turkey, with the temper, the cravings, the headaches, and my personal favorite, the uncontrollable shaking for the first 6 months [is that a bad thing? lol]. Nowadays a Coolah will keep me running the whole day and well into night.

Point is, you can do anything if you want to do it bad enough. Keep it up!

I'm fighting with the same monkey on my back as well, and i'm not making as much progress as i should be. quitting smoking for me isn't so much the nicotine as it is having something to do with my hands, keeping them busy so that i don't think about lighting up.

i'm going with the nicotine gum and patch approach. mainly because i don't have any health insurance and my medical bills are already backed up. I was smoking nearly two packs a day and have cut back to less than a pack a day.

i generally tend to smoke more when i'm working at the computer so that makes it even harder to quit because i'm at the helm 8-10 hours a day at least. it would be a big help if i could find a job and being back in an environment where i don't have the option to just light up when i feel like it.

aside from that i've been getting back into hjamming with my drummer and looking to get another band started which should help keep my hands busy playing guitar. regardless, i feel your pain in trying to quit and i'm fighting right along side ya.

we must soldier on!!!

Try my method. Just keep a piece of paper under the keyboard, and write the time of each one you smoke. I have been amazed how many times I thought it had been 1 hour when it had only been 10 mins between smokes.

However you try, good luck to you!

Hey, congrats on the decision to stop.

You were right when you said its weapon was habits.
Another thing that should help is keeping the cigs in a ziplock bag in the back of your freezer.
Not terribly hard to get to, but enough to make it somewhat annoying, which makes your brain realize that you're trying to smoke, rather than just doing it. Pretty much the same thing as writing the number of times down, but adding more things will help even more.

Good luck.

Good Luck Dude!

Try taking a walk to get rid of temptation and listen to music while doing so. It will make you feel better about yourself and increase your health at the same time. Ive done it, and it helps get rid of the stress of the day.

milosh, I keep my smokes in the silverware drawer, and my lighter on top of the fridge. If you are trying to stop smoking, never have your lighter and smokes withing arms length...
