Word of the Day!!
illation (ih LAY shun)
n. Illation is the act of inferring from data or the resulting inference or conclusion drawn. THe adjective
illative (IL u tiv, ih LAY tiv), applies to anything that pertains to or introduces or expresses an inference. The word
therefore is an
illative word: it introduces a conclusion drawn from what has gone before.
Illation is from Late Latin
illatio (a carrying in), related to
illatus, past participle of
inferre (to infer), based on the prefix
il- (in; a variant of
in- before
l) plus
latus (carried). One must not jump to
illations, though some people say it's the only exercise they get.
