Default Screwing my sister over :-)

Wel shes getting on my nerves, always downloading stuff/hogging all the bandwidth! I want to be able to limit her d/load rate, we have wireless broadband, i have access to the router config but i dont know where to start...do i need some sort of program or is it possible to disconnect her/limit her on the router settings...i have looked but can see nothing

If i cant limit her bandwidth then im quite happy to cut her off completely :-) if only until she stops downloadin so much!

why not just block the ports that her programs use for downloading?

What is she downloading? I'm intrigued.

You could also do a "Filter by MAC address" and turn off access to everything but the cards in the machines you want downloading. I have that up as a rudimentary security measure, but you could also use it to pull the plug on your sister.

Or even check if you get a 'parental controls' panel in the router, and use it to limit her downloading to when you're not doing it.

Obviously your sister needs schooling. Send her to the Academy of Iateronmly and she'll lose interest in downloading. However, she may develop a fetish for the smell of fish and burnt metal...

Well ... my first thought is, nice family. You'd rather screw your sister over than accept the limitations her usage puts on your browsing pr0n.

My second is, you've got a wireless connection. If you have half a brain, you realized that she's not hogging your bandwidth with a wireless signal, because she can't possibly be getting more than 108kps, and likely no more than 54kps with that medium. Which means your real problem is that you don't understand the limitations of your wireless signal ... you're slowing down because you're only getting 54kps on your own wireless band.

My third thought is that if I was your dad and found out you had decided to define limits on the bandwidth because you felt like it, I'd remove your access completely and let her browse all she wants, just to teach *you* a lesson. You have a problem, settle it with her. If you can't, you bring it up to the folks, and they settle it, and if you don't like the settling, too bad. Grow up. To quote a favorite movie, "Life is pain. Anyone who tells you different is selling something."

54k?

Typical 802.11g is 54Mbps peak.

Typical cable here is 7Mbps, or 12 if you pay extra.

Typical DSL is 1.5-6Mbps.

She can saturate the connection by herself most likely.

Well, dang ... I'm an idiot for that one, then.

But my family matters points still count. If my kid adjusted the wireless signal in my home, I'd remove his ass from that network post-haste, and everything else as well. Ain't his network, he oughtn't be mucking with it.

slightly OTT title and ****ey attitude coming through. Just talk to your sister mabey? I have a good relationship with mine and we bothe understand that it's importnant to talk to each other if we want to do a huge download as it makes gaming imposible due to additional latancy. Most p2p clients can be throtled anyway by the user, you could ask her to spare a few Kb/s for your web browsing surley?
