Word of the Day!! glacis (GLAY sis, GLAS is) n. In days of yore, soldiers would build a bank sloping down from their fort so that an attacking foe would be an easier target for the defenders' missiles. This word is from the French, who got it, via the Old French verb glacier (to slide, slip) from Latin glacies (ice). Nowadays glacis denotes any gentle slope. Forts are obsolete as defenses, and a glacis in the old sense wouldn't be much help in the face of rockets and similar contrivances. Welcome to Thursday!! I hope everyone is doing well.
