| The following is a quote from Rush Limbaugh on his radio talk show this morning when Governor Terminator called in. Rush started right in, calling Arnold a sellout. Arnold countered that when he became governor, he became the people's governor. Rush replied... "I believe conservatism is the best way to provide the most opportunity and success for the vast majority of people. Government simply can't do it. You mentioned the minimum wage and compromising. You compromised on the price, but you still accepted the premise of liberalism that minimum wage is a somehow going to improve people's lot in life, and it doesn't." LINK So...........raising minimum wage isn't going to improve people's lives? What a dumb *ss. I lump him in with all the other polarizing nutjobs out there, from Michael Moore to Ann Coulter. These folks are doing more damage to America than any other facet of our lives. Shows like Hannity & Colmes, the Situation Room, the 700 Club, and Lou Dobbs Tonight (these among others) is nothing more than taking the basic facts of a news story and spinning the son of a b*tch into entertainment (and yes, the O'Reilly Factor is one of the worst ones). Entertainment has taken over the news services of our country and it's very sad that many Americans watch these shows believing them to be actual news. Sh*t, you might as well watch Jon Stewart That's where I get the majority of my news from. | ||

| I stoped listening to radio talk shows (newstalk in pittsburgh) mainly because of the good ones (Glennbeck, Jim Quinn) are in the early morning and rush is on at noon. As for TV, The Daily Show + Colbert Report are my main source of entertainment, i say that in all honesty. I laugh at the goverment today (not the goverment in general, i mean i rather watch political funnys than serious talk), and as much as I am a conservative, Jon Stewart is funny, and that why i watch it. Rush lost my attention when he started his monotone talk, and the pills + viagra deal. Minimum wage isn't helping PA much these days though. In July it goes up again, and everything is already getting more expensive (hell a candybar at the groery store is fricken $1.19 now, and that was only a $1 raise in minimum wage It goes up another $1 in july) | ||

I actually think that O'Reilly is worse than Limbaugh. While Limbaugh is obvious, O'Reilly does it in a slick way. He tries to make you feel stupid by withholding a tiny fact while over exploiting another fact. His talking points the other day had to do with the judges when he said something like President Bush only fired 8 U.S. Attornys when President Clinton fired all 93 U.S. Attornys. What he fails to mention is that President Reagan also fired all 93 U.S. Attornys, too. I know that it sounds like I'm picking on conservatives here because my liberal views are well-known, but damn it, both sides pull this crap. News is not entertainment and maybe I'm selling them short, but the vast majority of Americans can't tell the difference between news and entertainment. Instead of making their own decision, they are allowing these types of shows to make their decisions for them. Just the other day, I read that one in five Americans is functionally illiterate. Damn, we're in sorry shape... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Interestingly enough my social studies teacher was talking about this with another student today. She was complaining that news media wasn't capable of delivering just "the facts" without any sort bias. I made the comment "You mean like Bill O'Rielly?" And she responds: "No I think Bill O'Rielly's great at reporting ""just the facts"" " No sarcasm at all. ![]() | ||

| I remember I went on a trip to DC where along with other students my age, we chose topics and went to our Senators' and Reps' offices and lobbied. My topic was minimum wage. The group that organized the trip did a crazy good job and for me they had a chart that listed how many hours one would have to work a week to pay rent on a decent house in a decent neighborhood at minimum wage. Interestingly enough, my great state, NJ, had the highest, somewhere past 120 hours a week. I prepared this whole long speech about how my older brother is forced to live at home working minimum wage...and wah wah wah....While I didn't actually get to talk directly to my senator, I did speak to his aid who agreed with me, but said that as a republican they felt that raising the wage would hurt small businesses so if it was coupled with a tax break they would gladly raise it... And now a year or two later it was done. Yay! I passed a bill! I can't speak for California, but I'd be in favor of any reasonable raise in wages. | ||
