inspissate (in SPIS ate) vb. To inspissate is to thicken; to make or become thicker or denser, as by evaporation. It is from Latin inspissatus, past participle of inspissare, base on spissare (to thicken), related to spissus (thick). The English lexiconographer, poet, and critic Samuel Johnson ("Dr Johnson," 1709-1784) used the evocative expression "inspissated gloom," much more moving than inspissated oatmeal, for instance, thickened by being allowed to stand too long on top of a cold stove.
