Default help a newb with his first OC

That's right, milosh has taken the plunge.
Not only is milosh refering to himself in the third person, he's done a little bit of over clocking.

I'll get my specs out of the way now.

Sckt 939 Athlon 64 3200+
DFI UT nF4 Ultra-D
2x Corsair CMX512-3200C2

So, right now, I've got it set like so

FSB: 220
Multiplier: 10x (locked at 10)
Vcore: 1.4V
DRAM ratio: 200
DRAM voltage: 2.7V

I left the LDT multiplier on auto, and my board decided on 5x
I also left the LDT voltage at the stock 1.2V

I loosened the timings from 2-3-3-6 to 2.5-3-3-6 so I could run the sticks at the 220MHz because it's rated PC3200 and it won't boot if I leave it at 2-3-3-6.

I'm cooling it with a Zalman CNP9500, which of course keeps everything nice and cool.

Like this, it idles at 25-26C and under load (Prime95 "Blend" Torture Test) about 32-33C.

Booted fine with no crashes during Prime95 or CS:S.

Now, all this points to a stable OC, and at first I pushed this to 240 FSB with a 1.45 vcore and 180 DRAM ratio. That ran at the same temps pretty much without BSOD either.

So, milosh, why are you asking for help?

Well, besides asking for suggestions as to what some good settings would be, I ran into one problem I hadn't mentioned.

I run a eVGA 7600GT with all this. Sorry that I'm not reffering back to something like 3DMark, but I forgot to install it before the OC, but if enough people demand the results, I'll put stuff at stock and run it.

Anyhoo, before the overclock, I used to get an average of 130 FPS with full settings (except for Vsync) on the video stress test in CS:S.

After the overclock, no other changes, its dropped to 93-94 FPS, same settings.

Has anyone here seen anything like this or could suggest steps to take to remedy the situation? (I must be tired if I'm talking like that.)

Afterthought: The PSU is an Antec TruePowerII 430W.

Thanks

EDIT: CPUZ screenies

Well..I'm on my way to bed so i can't get into much detail ATM.

Now..if you reset back to defaults will the game framerate go back up to 130FPS? I would suspect the OS might have crashed a time or two, wich would account for a loss in performance.

I use the Super Pi 1mb test to check for improvments in performance quickly..and the 32MB test for stability, and then with Folding@home 24-7 testing..prime 95 is a good test, but only to a point since it doesn't load the graphics...a 4 hour ror more round of gaming is the true test IMO, and flawless folding for weeks on end.

Reset back to defaults after saving your current profile in the bios (There should be a menu for that)
and see what happens to your framerates.

Quick settings I would tweek..first, drop that LDT to 4x, that may be part of the issue with gaming...it can realy throw a wrench into the OC, 4x is good for 250FSB, and 3x between 250 and 330.

Ram...try 2.5-3-3-7, and 2.8v, that might get you to 230FSB 1to1, and 3-4-4-8 may get you a bit beyond that...your TRC might be a bit tight at 13 too, try 15 if the other settings don't help (Along with the looser timings possibly)

Your PSU is at the low end of what I would think is needed for a good OC, how do your 12v rails look under load during a game? if they are under 11.9v when OC'd, then that would explain the performance loss to a degree too.

Speed Fan has a charting tool that you can look at immediately after exiting the game...

damn....the framrate stayed down
i was pretty sure an oc wouldn't lower performance and i was right, it was simply that i hadnt recalled any other changes

including a crash

so, sounds like the only way to regain such performance would be a reinstall right...? damn....

i tried those settings, with 2.5-3-3-7, trc still at 13, and its solid, 34 load, 25 idle

and i used speed fan, my +12V idles at 11.97, somethingn my bios told me also, and drops to 11.9 ingame, so not terrible, considering it was a budget build with no original intent for overclocking

Did ya drop the LDT to 4x?

And yes, it sounds like the OS got a bit toasted...

And if you are at 42c load, you have more headroom to OC the cpu, and possibly bump the voltage up one more notch if needed

Do some Super Pi 1Mb tests and post the results when ya get a chance, it will be very sensative to Memory timings/Speeds and CPU speed.

ok, and im not sure if you misread or just hit the wrong key
im 34c load, not 42

ill get those results up

and of course, thanks for helpin the newb

EDIT: k, here's a screenie

While I would do a fresh install of windows to eliminate it as a possible
problem. You can always try just reinstalling the drivers. Remove them
thru the add/remove programs icon in your control panel. But go one
step further and use DriveCleaner to double check the uninstall. It may
help, but I'm unsure. You may need to do this for all your drivers.
Chipset, Video, Sound and so on. Most of all, you need to remember
everything Necro tells you. He's worth more than he charges. HeHeHe :-)
DriveCleaner cleaner used to be available at guru3d but I can't
find it anywhere now. Email me and I'll send you the file. It's about 3mb :-)

42's!! Not good for the chip your running.. Should be in the mid 30s when overclocked a lil and since your still running a 1:1, I would try what necro told you, Fresh install of windows it should do the trick..

42c might not be far off the mark realy..kinda depends on his ambient temps!

He did say it was a mistake on his part, and it was in the mid 30's

Either way..I "Tune" my CPU clock speed and voltage to be at 50c or less, and adjust it up or down depending on the time of year, summer time sucks sweaty donkey balls for OC'ing (Unless you crank the AC!)

Yes summertime is annoying for everyone using air cooling. It's a shame aswell because loads of hardware seems to come out in the summer (Last Year Conroe + X1900XTX in July).

HAHA sorry i didnt make it very clear .. I was talking about his super PI times LOL 42s and it should be in the mid 30s with that 1:1 ratio

Sorry again guys.. I was reading to myself and didnt even think about making it clear to everyone else!

Matt

ok, lemme see if i can straighten this out for myself

when matt said 42, he was talking about my pi time, which he is accurate about, and yes it should me higher

when solid said 42, he said "c", talking temperature, which made me confused because i said my load temp is 34 or so

(yeah, gpu is kinda high, its a 7600gt (aircooled) and im too cheap to buy it a hs/f atm)

as for an os reinstall, i have two things im working on to get me some xp pro luvin on the cheap (ubuntu after i get another hd)
