Default Quad-FX, why no OC

http://forums.pcapex.com/anandtech/9...highlight=quad

So afteri read through anandtechs fairly indept review, i wondered, why didnt he OC it,were the differences between the E6600 and the FX-74 that bad, or wasn't he able, he said there is a plethera of BIOS settings, and being that there two NB that could be an interesting board to OC, Thing about it, since stated

"Note that these CPUs are effectively Opterons but with the memory controller configured to support un-buffered DDR2"

As well as they are 1207 pin chips, meaning theyare opterons really, so why can't they OC, never mentioned, or at least i didnt catch it, although imalmost postive i never missed a word.

AnandTech: AMD's Quad FX: Technically Quad Core
Another foreign review on the chips and there performance, although more game related, but yet another review

Some more infoi read here on wikipedia
Socket 4x4 chipset - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Interesting stuff, but sad that there justtring to pull out something before being removed from the performance race, supposid "native quad core"

In "Preview" tests, they often don't OC the hardware, either AMD asked them not too, the hardware is still in "Engineering Sample" level and can't...or the shipping version won't have the option...wich is unlikey given the "FX" series is supposed to have unlocked multipliers and be aimed at "Enthusiasts"

Performance was realy disapointing, I thought they would get a bit closer to Kentsfield...and with the cost of the motherboard through the roof, there is no compelling reason to even think about buying one even if the top of the line CPU's are priced the same, with slower versions costing a bit less...power consumption is just rediculously bad too!

I had a feeling this would be a bad move for AMD when I first read about the 4x4 platform earlier this year...reminded me of the first socket 940 FX 5~53 CPU's that had a very short platform life....but without the benchmark killing performance the original had...I hated being right on this!

They claim you can slip a pair of 4 core CPU's when they become available late 07, but I doubt that will be enough to justify a reason to buy one even then performance wise...memory latency on this platform sucks, AMD needs a complete rework of the "Core" of there CPU to get back in the game, and I don't think that happens till 2008, wich gives Intel plenty of time to develop new generations of hardware and keep pulling ahead.

Another Ironic thing happened, i ran through a december 2004 issue of my online monthly periodical, GAMEINFORMER. In the new and awesome tech kinda section, included the nintendo DS, and the alienware PC that has DOOM 3 pre installed, and had a 6600GT 256MB PCI-e card, and a FX-53 chip, the old kind priced at $3,799 for the whole deal including a case keyboard an mouse, but no moniter. Damn that brought back memorys, it talked of being able to plya DOOM 3's ultra setting perfectly, without trouble at all.

I'm guessing the insane power usage didn't help either.

Yah almost 600W of power that rig was pulling that is nuts with only one videocard!

AMD is really shotting their own foot with this one me thinks...

its sad AMD is just stretching thier necks out on this one... I mean isn't this similar to what Intel did towards the end of the pentium cycle, they said screw heat and went for speed, just to try to get a glimpse of AMDs performance back.
