Question Can you run the Memory FSB faster than the CPU FSB?

I was wondering if you can run the memory at a faster bus speed than the CPU, I have seen it done the other way when people have the CPU at 200fsb, and the memory at 166fsb.

I have the opposite situation, my CPU seems to hit the wall around 219FSB, But my memory will go to 250FSB in theory....

I understand that you should run the memory in synch with the CPU for best performance, Would it realy hurt to run the memory faster, and not slower?
Something I read once mentioned a collision in the datastream from the memory to the CPU if you feed it faster than the CPU bus speed.

The Bios has memory dividers on my Abit NF7-S, is there one I could use to overclock just the memory beyond 220FSB and keep the CPU at say around 200FSB?

Normally, aren't these dividers only used for underclocking the memory, pci, and agp bus?

Yes, you can run the ram faster than th proc. Just bench it both ways and see which performs better.

If your board supports it, go for it.

Bob, you have a similar setup to mine, are you using the 3/4 divider or 3/5? what are the rest of your settings in the bios when you overclock this way? Is the board stock or volt modded?
I was using an Asus before, and the Abit boards have some nice bios options, and are taking some getting used too..

So far this T-bred B has been to 2433 (11.5x 211) or 2443 (12x203.5) and have maxed out at 219fsb with a 9.5 multiplier (2080Mhz) I haven't had any luck with the 10 or 10.5 multiplier above 190FSB. I think it may have more hidden in the bios, and temps are getting pretty warm (50c or more)

I am hoping to see how far I can push my memory on this board, gives me an idea what she will do if I can find a better overclocking chip.

Wtf thats some crappy ass typing
Anyways

You can run your cpu at 333MHz and your ram at 400MHz...im 15 and i just got my first computer with ddr ram last week and I figured it out on my own, its pretty damn simple!!!!! Just use the dividers!

hows about picking up the tictac d22 custom BIOS i wrote a whole thread over about a week ago....it fixes the 10 - 10.5 multiplyer issue perfectly and is based on rev.22 of the official Abit BIOS....merry xmas...

you want tictacs, lots a good has come from his BIOS and im betting it will be good 4 u 2....

I have done this before with a build for a customer. The cpu was 200 (duron 1400 i think) and the ram was 266. The 2 worked fine together without a hich, i guess all that would happen is the memory would process the data faster.

Thanks Fu3lman, this thread is from September of 2003, someone dug this out of the archives

I no longer have the ABIT (RIP) I did find more info later on about running Assynch, I was seeing if that board and Geil DDR500 memory would reach 500FSB, I thought the CPU might have been holding me back, and wanted to isolate it the rest of the hardware.

Using the 5/4 Memory to CPU ratio I ended up with 500 MHZ memory speed and 376 MHZ CPU speed (188x11)
Benchmark results were low as expected, much worse than at 400MHZ in synch.

I found out about the different bios revisions that let the 10x multiplier work much to late to help on that board.

Ironically, I finally ended up reaching 500+FSB in Synch this month with out of the box parts, using the DFI Lan Party Rev B, Barton Mobile 2500+ and the Geil DDR500

I have my Kingston 333mhz @ 400, and my Cpu is on a 166fsb. I noticed a small improvement in Sisoft Sandra, than when my ram is synched at 333mhz with my Cpu. I ran memtest86 all night with my ram overclocked at 400mhz. I didn't need to increase the voltage to my ram either. You won't see much of a Performance increase, due to the Cpu "bottlenecking" because of it's lower fsb speed. My timings are set at 2.5-3-3-6. I'd say OC the ram faster than Cpu if you want, but doing it too much is overkill. Like I said..I got only slightly better scores in Sisoft sandra on the Arithmatic, and multimedia benches, but on the Ram benches, It runs like 400mhz ram should ...just play around and benchmark like that one guy said

You are about 10 months late with your reply...

Thx, I was trying to test my memory in a quest for 500FSB AMD, I think I have it figured out now
