Default Looks like I am getting a new CPU

Well, currently I have a 3700 San Diego CPU in the old ASRock Dual Sata board. I saw a deal in here for an older FX chip AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 ClawHammer 2.6GHz. Thanks T2. I am kinda short on cash, but this looked like a good deal, and my boss will buy whichever chip I do not want. His fastest machine is an Athlon 2800, so either way, one or both of us get an upgrade.

AFTER I ordered the chip, I did some research on it, and well, it certainly is not top of the line, but I think it will work in my mobo. Do any of you have experience using the 2 CPU's? My current CPU o/c nice and stable around 2.6GHz, the new one is 2.6 stock, so I am hoping for 2.9GHz.

Well, thanks for your time.

If they are both 90NM version (Early FX-55's were 130NM) I would probably still think the 3700+ would have a slight edge, it should be a newer revision, it should be a "Rev.F" and they often will hit 3GHZ too like the Opteron's...not many of the FX-55's would do that on just air.

I you ever plan on going with "Extreme cooling" (Phase, Dry Ice, LN-2) then the FX may be the one to keep, it has an unlocked multiplier and is less prone to cold bugging, especially if it's the 130NM version oddly enough.

Sounds like you have not pushed your 3700+ hard enough..what kind of voltage are you pushing in it? (Should be able to take 1.55-1.6v with high end air cooling)

The new CPU is the 130NM version. My voltage options on this board are, poor. I tried soldering 2 points on the motherboard to get more options, it did not work. My soldering skills are, well to be nice, weak. I am just happy I did not fry the dang board!

Well, since I already ordered the CPU, and my boss is going to buy the slower of the two, looks like I will have some benchmarking to do.
