Default Overclocking CPU does not influence game Frame Rates

Hello,

Can any of you genius's 'xplain to me WHY I don't see increased frame rates during gameplay AFTER I have overclocked my cpu 200 mhz? I see the same FPS at 2000mhz that I see at 2200mhz.

Graphics: Radeon 9700 128 mb
Cpu: Amd 2400 XP
Memory: 1025 mb Corsair pc3500

Quite simply, the GPU is the limitation. I have a 9700 Pro myself and it is very powerful and I have not found it to be a bottleneck yet, what games are you having framerate issues or lag with?

Thankyou for your reply.

"Quite simply, the GPU is the limitation."

This, I believe is the truth...I wonder WHAT cpu speed is OVERKILL for a Radeon 9700 (regular)? Maybe, I am already beyond the capabilities of the 9700 running an Athlon 2400 overclocked from stock 1997 mhz to 2200 mhz. Is there a FORMULA for calculating the best combination of cpu to gpu speed? Might need NEW graphics card to see frame rate increases.

"...what games are you having framerate issues or lag with?"

Frankly, I am not having framerates that are too slow...they simply don't increase...the framerates are fine. For example, I run

Microsoft Flight Simulater 2004 at 1920*1440@75hz

with all display options at max, and my fps vary between 26 (viewing the ground clutter with plane in foreground) to over 80 (viewing the sky with plane in foreground). I average about 40fps.

1920*1440???

Holy sh!t bro!!!

Overclock your card...that's the ONLY way you're going to increase framerates at that resolution, and then it'll only be a bit...that's a HUGE resolution to be running a game at! 26-40FPS - isn't that kinda choppy?

One of the tricks I use for rtcw is to go into my config file, and adjust the cap for maxframerates. It is set to 80 stock, I don't have a good graphics card, so I cap mine at 42fps, It smooth things out on my mx420, and stays steady at 42 most of the time. Ther are a few "magic" settings for rtcw that exploit the physics in the game engine. They are like 43, 76 and 120, I know those numbers aren't exact, you will have to look them up. Believe it or not I can jump farther at this setting also. I could never get on top of this one building in the map "THE RIVER" and saw a few people that just hopped right up there, then I found out they were Tweekin the config.
There is a game tweek guide at RTCW for Dummies.

Some of the tweeks are out and out cheats, so be carefull, It may get you kicked by punkbuster! I only make minor adjustments, like the framerate, some will allow you to remove all the leaves on trees, and make the scenery bare, that is truely unfair, and IS WAY OUTSIDE THE LIMITS of tweeking and then becomes a cheat in my opinion.
You could probably raise the cap in any game config, if you can find it in there

Thats more than adueqate bro. The best recommendation for the best CPU and GPU speeds are have as fast a CPU as you can, and as fast a videocard you can. Although I look at it in a different perspective; if I can keep 60fps strong in a game at max quality, then there is no need to overclock or upgrade. In many games I clockdown my R9700PRO to saviour it from death as I don't need to be running 100+fps as its unneccessary and I can't see the difference between 60 and 100fps. Although sometimes I do get curious and want to see how fast this baby will go, havn't actually overclocked it yet, but in a year I'm sure I will have to start overclocking it to just stay at 60fps.

Hey...wat's UPPP?

pimp_joose; "26-40FPS - isn't that kinda choppy?"

No siree...smooth as glass. I also love my 22 inch monitor, a COMPAQ P1220...I won't be leaving MY crt for an lcd monitor anytime soon. By the way, I highly recommend COMPAQ monitors because they look fantastic and have outstanding warranties. COMPAQ just replaced this monitor AFTER I used it for 2 whole years (they come with 3 year warranty)...No questions asked after a slight malfunction.

Crankenstein;

"Although sometimes I do get curious and want to see how fast this baby will go, havn't actually overclocked it yet"

My Radeon 9700 is soft modded to R9800 using Omegadrive drivers

http://www.omegacorner.com/ .

These are the best modified drivers that I have been able to find. Omegadrive provides both nVidia and ATI drivers. My R9700 is ALWAYS slightly overclocked from stock :

276.75 Core is 294.75
270.00 Mem is 288.00

for a total of = 18 points on each...it runs GREAT! I use RADCLOCKER (http://www28.brinkster.com/chrisww1942/ ) or Rage3dTweak ( http://rage3d.com/r3dtweak/ ) to overclock. BOTH are EXCELLENT programs.

Sorry Jazz, havent been around to answer this earlier, you can't run a game like FS2004 at those settings and expect liquid gameplay, really, turn it down to 1280x1024.

My rule of thumb is running the highest resolution I can without lagging. If you see a sustained FPS under 30, it will look choppy, and its time to turn the settings down a bit.

I COULD BE WRONG but your FPS is not limited to your screen (hz)??

Exp: I if i doo a FPS test on Quake 2 with Vsync-ON & my monitor is at 85 hz then i'm not gone get more then 85 FPS
but if i doo the same test with the Vsync-OFF then i get a bit over 350 FPS.

TekXoID:

No can do...once you gone 1920*1440, you can't go back. Besides, it's NOT choppy...I just wnat to see IF I can get faster fps at my resolution of choice (smile). I can email you a moving capture if you like.

You are absolutely RIGHT here. This is not a problem since I can turn off v-sync both in the game and in the graphics driver. I already have.
