Default n00b oc'er, where to start?

So, Ive read a few general guides to overclocking but Im still not sure where to start. Currently I have:

CPU: AMD Athlon 1ghz
Mobo: Asus A7V
Chipset: ViaKT133 (is this correct?)

I popped into my bios and noticed that I can change the dram frequency from 100 to 133. So is that the fsb? On my mobo I have located several jumpers and switches such as cpu clock and clock multiplier.

Considering that I dont want to mess with the multiplier as of yet and just the fsb, which jumpers and switches do I need to change?

Or if you dont want to explain anything to me you could just point me into the direction of a "decent" guide to overclocking for beginners.

Thank You!

I have the same motherboard in my server, yes that chipset is correct. Multiplyer on your Athlon is locked sorry to say. DRAM is the frequency of your RAM. Set it to 100 for PC100 ram; 133 for PC133 ram. Those set of 4 blue DIP switchs are to change your FSB, you can also do just the same in BIOS, I prefer to do so in BIOS. Highest FSB I've got with my 850mhz Athlon is 112, but with a voltage of 1.85, they just plain suck at overclocking. If you know how to reset your CMOS then start bumping up that FSB very slowly until you can't post. Then reset CMOS, up your voltage a notch, and try again. I don't recommend over 1.9v for you chip, as it gets bloody hot and will probably fry quite quickly without adequate cooling.

Good Luck

goto ADVANCED in BIOS. then highlight OPERATING FREQUENCY SETTING and change it to USER DEFINE. This will allow you change the CPU FREQUENCY. You will have multiple Options to change the FSB to. Just take it slowly and change one notch at a time, restart, continue until you wont post, then reset your CMOS. Then goto ADVANCED and highlight CPU VCORE SETTING, hit enter and change to USER DEFINE, this will unlock your vcore settings, up it one notch at a time while increasing your FSB. Do not go over 1.9v, it will seriously harm your processor.

GOOD LUCK

Bah, can't. The only option the is "By Jumper" However on the mobo I did notice a jumper set that reads "Jen" Pins 1-2 are "Jumper Mode" and pins 2-3 are "Jumper Free".

On the mobo there is another set of jumpers, 4 rows of 4 jumpers. The silkscreen says CPU Mhz. Im assuming this is the fsb of the cpu right? The jumper options are:

100, 103,105 and 110.

Yeppers thats the CMOS, and yeppers those 4 rows of 4 jumpers are your FSB settings. You must have an old revision of the motherboard, because I can change through either BIOS or the jumpers.

Good Luck

Yea, switching the Jen jumper allowed me to change those options. Im assuming that if I change the cpu freq (fsb for short?) in the bios then I have to do the same with the 4 jumpers on the mobo?

I didnt touch the 4 jumpers but I changed the cpu freq in bios from 100 to 105. It also changed the dram frequency to that same value by itself. I looked at vcore and it said 1.6v. I saved and exited and nothing happened. Lost my video, so no post. I reset cmos and now Im typing this message

Thanks for all your help by the way, I really apprecite it.

I flashed my Award BIOS to the recent version from asus.com. Now I can see the entry that reads "FSB Frequency". I went from 100mhz to 101mhz. Since my clock multiplier jumper on mobo is at 10, this made my cpu clock 1010mhz. Pretty simple and makes sense. So is that it, did I just overclock? Do I just keep bumping up my fsb until I cant post? Do I need to adjust the clock multiplier and or vcore settings?

Yes you overclocked
I am not sure about multipliers on that old of a CPU and Mobo, but I believe they are locked. There is a "trick" to unlock it, but I am not sure how on the old Athlons.
Keep bumping up that FSB till it won't boot up and then give her a bump in the vcore. Repeat until you hit the wall.
Watch your CPU temperature, bumping up the vcore will add some heat fast!
(grab Motherboard Monitor, it's a free download)
