Default Am2 or 939?

hey guys, as some of you may know, ive been working on project preformance one for awhile...
My orginal plans were to put a opty 146 in the system and overlock it on air.. But now that the new am2 processors and mobo's have came out im not sure on what I should do for a processor... I'm not familiar with the am2 besides the fact that they support ddr2 memory.. Since this is a new computer, should I make the upgrade to ddr2 or stick with the old 939 platform? is there any good deals for the am2 processors? ive been out of the loop for quite a long time and I just recently heard about the am2 processors.. Also if anyone knows any great deals for the am2 processors/motherboards that would be great.. I dont plan on spending more then $1000 on the case, mobo, processor, memory, powersupply, video card and maybe another harddrive.. I've posted this here because of my orginal plans to oc the opty 146.. and since you guys know alot about overclocking the 146's as well as other processors.. I figured i would ask for your valuable opinions..

Are you solid with AMD? There is always conroe.

Personally, I would suggest AM2 because they are trying to phase out 939. With the support for DDR2 and that new DFI board that just came out, it would be pretty tough to turn it down, even if conroe does perform better at stock speeds.

Wikipedia ftw, I think it provides a decent amount of info
Socket AM2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I myself have an AM2. I would go with it, since its fairly new there arent too many aftermarket heatsinks for it methinks.

To be honest im just trying to get the best pc i can get for under $1000.. My friend has a pentium 4 processor at 3.2 ghz and other then that his PC pretty much the same exact stats as mine except on my current system i have a amd athlon 3000+ instead.. mine blows his computer out of the water when it comes to running applications, and games... so thats why im a fan of amd...

No reason not to buy AM2, unless you really want to keep DDR1.

You should be able to get a very respectable AM2 rig for under $1000.

Okay, how about a case? Power supply? Do you want it to be more for gaming or spend a little less on the video card and go for the better CPU? Is this a lot of questions?

Na its cool.. I like questions....

Case: Antec p180 black.. (open to other ideas)
PSU: 500 + watt modular power supply.. not sure what brand (yet again open to ideas)
Id prefer it for gamming... I was thinkign mabye a sapphire x1800xt for a video card.. though im always open for ideas.. And I also do alot of graphic design.. as you probably already know

I mean it doesnt have to be anything hard core.. I dont understand why people say get 2 gigs of ram to do graphic art.. I can understand for gamming (bf2) but 1 gb should be enough for using photoshop, flash, fireworks, etc.. I have a athlon 3000+ with a 9800 pro and 1 gig of cheap ass ram and Im still able to run photoshop, and flash at the same time without a problem..

DFI Board $205.99
RAM I would recommend OCZ platinum or gold
Processor I would recommend an Opty or other X2 CPU
Video Card I would recommend a 7300 or better (nvidia of course)
PSU I would recommend would again be OCZ 700 Watts or better

Nice job finding those parts, EL_chuupaGrande. + rep for you. I would definately go with the DFI board, ever since I bought mine as far as I am concerned they are the only mobo manufacturer.

Looks like BA's scores have converted another member. Next build is definitely leaning towards Conroe.

SnOman, What are you arguements not to go with the conroe?

well, it is pretty much loyalty at this point keeping me with AMD. By tax time I will have the money to build a new rig, so I may go to the dark side by then. The main thing I am liking about AM2 is the possible ability to upgrade to AM3 with the same socket.

Don't get me wrong though, those scores are very sweet!
