Default Opteron 165 Overclocking Probs

Right Guys haven't been looking forward to writing this post as i have a feeling I am gonna be typing a while lol as I am still new OCing. I have been using a 3700+ San Deigo and recently upgraded to Dual Core and got some better ram....doing so would also free up a cpu and ram for my media center After installing my new Opteron 165 and 2gig GSkill ram I began to start OCing and benching to get a nice stable OC that i can leave constantly running.

Stock settings on the Opti 165 are 200*9-1.8ghz 1.35v and the GGkill 3-4-4-8 2.6-2.8v

So first off i started by rasing my cpu fsb to 250*9 and left the cpu Vcore at stock and it boots no problem all the way upto 280*9 and thats with the ram at 1:1 aswell but if i try to bench with orthos it fails, anything higher than 280fsb i need to alter my divider to DDR333 (5:6)

So after playing about i have now got it sort of stable by increasing the volts over the cpu below is how its currently setup

Current setup
CPU 280*9 = 2.5Ghz, my timings i have set at 3-4-4-8 and i haven't altered them from that also its set to DDR333 (5:6) and 2.8Volts, HT Freq x3, PCIE clock 100Mhz, CPU Vcore 1.475 (this is the highest i have set it and it seems stable on some fsb using this) Now using the above settings it wont get past 15mins on orthos at 290*9......Also the average temps are 28c-32c idle and 48c-53c load (very rarely does it go to 53c and normally keeps itself just below or on 50c, and my room was like an oven on the days i OCed)

Apart from not being able to get a higher OC (which i am sure i will get soon enough) the thing i cant understand is that with my 3700 SanDeigo@ 2.2ghz, 2gb Kingston value ram and my 7900GTX @ 650/1700 my 3dMark05 score was a semi respectable 9710. But now i have done the 3dMark05 on my new Opti @2.5ghz, My new GSkill ram and my 7900GTX my score has gone down to a pittifull 7354 Needless to say i am not a happy camper. I thought about using 3dMark06 as its wrote around dual core so when i did and i got a score of 5677 but tbh i am not sure whether thats good or bad as I havent used it before. Below i have put some screenies

OLD SETUP:3700 San Deigo @2.2, 2gig Kingston Value and 7900GTX 3dMark05 score

OLD SETUP:3700 San Deigo @2.2, 2gig Kingston Value and 7900GTX 3dMark06 score

NEW SETUP:Opteron 165 @2.5, 2gb GSkill and 7900GTX 3dMark05 Score

NEW SETUP:Opteron 165 @2.5, 2gb GSkill and 7900GTX 3dMark06 Score

So I apologise for both the length of this post, how poorly laid out it is and also my spelling lol :S.................And let me thanks in advance anyone who takes the time out to read it and help me out
Cheers again guys [/b]

Hi Vdarthh2001, first off what mobo & psu are you using as these can limit your o.c'ing somewhat.

I think most of us who have changed over from a single core cpu to a dual core cpu without reformatting were kinda dissapointed in 3D mark results ( or was it just me ) not to mention some flaky behaviour form XP as well, there's a few things you need to install for your dual core if you haven't already done them that help out.

Whats your cpu score in 05 ?
I scored 4893 on my cpu score in 3Dmark 05 @ a mild OC of 2229 Mhz. (Opty 170 )
Dont have any higher OC benches in 3Dmark 05,I prefer 03 and 2001se

I too was disapointed at first, and I came from a socket 754 Sempron 3400+ to a X-2 3800+. Then I tried playing games with things like photoshop or itunes in the backround and realized I didn't take a fps hit, then I was impressed. I don't think I could ever go single core again except maybe for a pure OC machine.

Hi guys cheers for your feedback....Sorry i haven't posted in a while but i have been busy

Jonni3 I am using a ABit AN8 SLI Fatal1ty MoBo and a 580W Hiper PSU.......so it shouldn't those holding back........But i am taking your comments about not reformating onboard So i have decided to upgrade my HDD's to either 2x SATA2 in raid0 or 2x Raptors in raid0 and reinstall my OS etc and see what happens then

RBIEZE My 3dmark05 score with my San Deigo3700+ and 2gg of Kingston Value RAM (before i upgraded) was 9710n and with my opteron 165 and 2gig of GSkill was 7354(after my upgrades).......So you can see the drop in score is BIG.......If you need to see what OC setting i had at the time just look at the pics i have added as its all there

Capt_cope I know what your saying buddy It will multi task better theres no doubt BUT i am noticing some serious drops in fps when playing Call Of Duty 2......however BF2 seems ok :S

So to summerise lads i am gonna buy some new HDD's for my OS, reinstall everything and see what happens.......so it may be a few weeks but i will be back to update this post

Cheers again lads BIG THANKS

I would suspect that motherboard may be holding back your max OC a bit. my guess is that board wil not do the 300+ FSB you wil need to reach 2.7GHZ or more without a bit of tweeking.

The lower scores you are getting are going to be found in the OS I would bet, along with the proper CPU driver...the "Raid" issue may also be a contributing factor, but I cannot say since I have never used it myself.

Make sure you get all the latest video card, motherboard, and DX-9 versions too....and if you have to use the ones on the factory CD to get it up and running initially, make sure you remove them in the proper way, and run driver cleaner before installing the new ones.

Disk Clean up and Defrag is also important...and don't load it up with unnecesay software before bench testing...(Windows security updates and service packs are known to bog things down a bit...just don't forget to get them later!)

Also, make sure the video card is set to "High Perf" in the control panel visual settings...that in itself will boost your scores a nice bit.

This thread below may be helpfull when tweaking out board settings.
