Maybe I read te article wrong, but to me it read as though necro was saying the new x2 procs had 2mb total cache? But the chart only shows the 5200 as having 2mb.

When amd releases quad core will current am2 mobos be compatible?

He was confused on the 2mb thing, and I don't think anyone is sure on the quad core issue.

The press release from AMD is what has spurred this question.

Especially when the speaker says that the Quad-processors will be electrically, thermally, and socket compatible with current Socket-AM2, then I just have to ask the question. And then with the idea of a dual Quad core processor platform that runs on non-ECC DDR2 ram on the horizon, raises even more important future proof questions.

With all these issues here, sure the Core 2's do one thing at blazing speed, but what is the choice for me when I want to do many things at once?

Not to gate crash the AM2 thread but this is pretty much the reason I'm still enjoying 939.

However if you do have the upgrade bug then this does seem like the cheapest way of going about it.

Any excuse to kick that old x800 eh

I must be the one that didnt get the memo...lol
Running my 930D chip was not as affordable as the 939 AMD stuff...however...I wanted to try new things....
I can see where the AMD faithfull might go down that path based on past laurels alone.

On another note...I just found out my board is listed on a CONROE compatible motherboard list on a MAJOR overclocking site...It seems the 8 phase power and the low voltages allowed are what makes it possible....
Now If I could get dual 16x lanes I would be happy.
lol

In all seriousness I am waiting for the first REAL overclocking core duo board with crossfire to come along...I am just not ready to toss out 1200 dollars in video cards yet.

I saw where Necro mentioned something about getting opterons, for a 1 mb cache per core they are a lot cheaper than the x2 5200+ well I have already bought my motherboard and I was wondering if an AM2 Opteron would work with my board. It is the Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 or if you want more info GIGABYTE GA-M59SLI-S5 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail at Newegg.com if not I will just get the 3800+ for now.

I reckon it would work, you could ask Gigabyte for a concrete answer.

The "Official" word on Opteron's for AM-2 is:

Quote:
Do not expect any Opteron cpu's to be supported

AMD won't allow us to officially support Opterons on the desktop, and at this time, DFI has no interest in fixing a bios for an Opteron cpu to work on our boards (because our boards are not server-class, and I did just mention that AMD won't allow it)

If you get an Opteron to work on the board, that is fine, but don't plan on getting any support for it from me, Rgone, nor DFI.

It isn't intended to be rude. It is intended to let you know the reality of the situation.

However..in the same thread:

Quote:
Dunno if this would help too much or not.. but i use to have a dfi infinity ultra II - M2 board.. and i got roughly 2.4ghz stable with the opty 1210 then after 2 weeks i ended up changing out to get an abit an9 32x at first i couldnt get but over 2.2ghz at first.. had it running with 1.5v ram@2.0v NB@1.35v SB@1.5 Pci-e@1.3v.. found out wat i did wrong was i still had my ram running at ddr800 wen i oc.. so i put it down to run at ddr400 and now im running 2.8ghz with 1.4v with zalman 9500... i will test with the infinity again later on in the weekend and come back with some result if you want.. but i wouldnt see why ur board doesnt like the oc at all

So it is going to be a shot in the dark if the Gigabyte will work or not, I am going to say it has a chance, but until you plug it in and play with it, there is no way of saying for sure...on 939, Opterons pretty much ran in just about any board though...but you can't count on that when they change sockets and ram, plus AM-2 is just not very popular, so Bios updates and "Hacked" bios's are going to be few and far between.
