| The 3500+ is the best bang for the buck for overclocking a single core CPU (The price difference of a 3200+ is like 10$ or less) and will cost under 100$ The 3800+ is the cheapest dual core CPU (Around 150$) Almost any AMD 64 (Unless you get a dud, or are realy bad at overclocking due to lack of knowledge or help) will run in the 2.6-3.0GHZ range, with the latest steppings (Revision number) of the newer AM-2 and 939's getting toward the top of the scale. Top coolers are generally considered to be the Thermaltake Big Typhoon, Zalman 9550, along with certain models from Scythe and Noctua (Can't remember them off the top of my head, they are kinda new too the OC scene) The most expensive ones top out at around 60$, but many other good coolers can be found in the 35-50$ range. How good is that power supply? Check out the link below about power supplies..a cheap or poorly designed one can make or break an OC! http://forums.pcapex.com/other_oc_ha...ood_power.html You on your own for a case..that is a personal choice, and outside the scope of this section..top brands are Lian li, Antec, Thermaltake...etc.(Unless someone wants to make a suggestion) | ||

| Hahaha thats a big negative goat rider. If your 3500 reaches 3.2 on water than youve definately gotten a lucky grab, and probably gotten the best processor out of the batch made. Your gonna have to add a whole lot of juice to be able to achieve an overclock like that and a good watercooling loop will only keep your processor closer to ambient temperatures longer.......and in comparison to some of the new heatpipe coolers like the Noctua NH-U12, not that much longer. It wont even do that well considering the juice your gonna have to pump to get 3.2. If your just talkin suicide runs to get some screenies than its possible but for under 400 bux including your components.....nope. Go with that Noctua and you should be able to pull 2.7 easy and stable, if not 2.8. Youll have enough cash to get it all and you can start saving up for a watercooling setup......not that itll get you too much more but youll definately look alot cooler reseting your bios. | ||

You are better off with the 3500+ for overclocking (Higher multiplier) there is only a 15$ price difference from the cheapest to the 3500+ and then you can save more money on buying more the more expensive ram! Btw, you are talking about socket AM-2 and not the older 939 aren't you? (939 is a dead end for future upgrades... AM-2 will support Quad core CPU's next year)

DFI SLI (Dual Video card) LP if you cannafford it..209$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136014 DFI Infinity if your budget can't handle it for 88$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136015 Watercooling is overkill for AMD-64 in terms of cost to beneifts. A Thermatake Big Typhoon, Zalman 9550, or something from Scythe or Noctau (Forget wich models) are among the top choices..they will often come within 100MHZ or so of high end water, and spank anything on the low end....all ofar 60$ or less with no maintainace or instillation hassles. As far as ram is concerned, you never mentioned how what size (1GB or 2?) so I guessed 1MB Take a peak at the link below and see if something meets your needs and budget http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ubCategory=542

| Apex Techie I | umm tigerdirect has pentium d 805 for 106 - 50 mir so 56 bucks total the 805 proc is a top notch overclocker and should reach 3.8 on air or 4.0 and up on cheap ass water kit get a new gigabyte ds3 or dq6 and you can drop a conroe or allendale straight in and go to work ocing the hell out of it- just make sure to update bios if you want to spend more i'd say get a e6300 now i'm trying to think of a good AMD but the current gen AMD's arent stellar overclockers and most are maxing out at 2.8-3.0 i hope amd comes out with k8l early... intel has realized that procs that oc well are going to sell in droves- maybe AMD will follow suit soon | |

3 things so water cooling isn't nessisary? will the cheaper dfi work for huge overclocking? what about that intel overclocking to 4.0 i am a huge amd fan and used to think intel was the devil but could it be my friend?

| No, water is not neccesary for a realy good OC, it can give you some nice gains, but I allready explained what the cons are..AMD-64 and Conroe are cool running chips compored to some of the older gens of CPU's, and Air cooling has made huge improvemnts over what you could get in the old days. Intel? It's the fastest CPU you can buy right now, check out the 1MB super pi times! http://forums.pcapex.com/results/607...m_ranking.html The DFI infinity seems to do a reasonably good job for OC, but you will have to do some more research to find out for sure. (Read new egg customer reviews, and google search for hardware site reviews) http://forums.pcapex.com/internet_ne...h_and_get.html Take a peak over at DFI street too http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/index.php Other useful links How to choose a good power supply http://forums.pcapex.com/other_oc_ha...ood_power.html Ultimate Links collection http://forums.pcapex.com/other_oc_ha...ollection.html If you choose to go to the "Darkside" I suggest you make new "Help with Conore Build" thread in the Intel section ![]() Last edited by $SOLID$ Necro; 03-September-06 at 11:37 PM. | ||

| I agree with SOLID NECRO. The +3500 is great for overclocking. I have one and im running at 2.7 ghz stable without raising voltage. I have used this processor for alot of computers ive built for freinds and family and it has never let me down. Its inexpensive and performs well. If you are looking into dual core i would suggest the Intel pentium D. It is also inexpensive and has found to be overclocked very high somtimes reaching the 3.8-4.0ghz range. | ||
