| Hmm... you want the fastest rig, but no Intel??? Cant be done right now. Conroe is the current king by a mile. But of course you can build a very nice system with an Amd Cpu. I'm about to build a new rig ,so i'm up on things at the moment. But you never said what you wanted to spend ? The phrase fastest Pc and budget do not go together,so you'll have to be a little more specific with the $$$ My builds near $3K and probably wont make first page on ORB without some serious subzero cooling. | ||

| Keep in mind this is coming from a HUGE AMD Fanboy: If you want the fastest... buy a core 2 duo. Say at least a 6400. Since I can't find any x1950xt on the shelves yet I'd go with 7950gtx (go SLI if you are using a decent moniter that can get at least 1600X1200, otherwise you won't see the gain) You hint at a budget so I'll tell you what I've got, obviously it works for me ![]() CPU: AMD 3800+X2 (Overclocked to 2.6ghz, comes stock at 2.0) Mobo: Asus a8n-sli "Deluxe" Ram: 1gb XMS (2.5 2 2 7, 1t) Graphics: 7900gt SLI (Overclocked to 577/800) 3dmark03: 32064 I'd go dual core for the processor, most games don't really optimize it yet, but you know it will come in time, Low latency, or at least high ocable ram is a must, you see HUGE benifits from it (My expirences at least, switching from "Buffalo" to XMS) Graphics card is up to you, if you are on a crappy LCD moniter stick to a single card, since your resolution likely won't get above 1024 x 786. If you have a high end one capable of high resolutions, SLI can't be beat... Yet... ATI has their X1950XT in the works as I've read (of course I'm guilible, so it could be a hoax) and it supposedly is far better than even the 7950GTX. Then there is the fact that DX10 is coming out eventually, making any and all current cards obsolete. If you have a system that works for you, and can hold out I'd recomend saving your money and going all out come DX10, Hopefully AMD will have a core 2 killer by then as well. | ||

| Not tryin to dis you capt_cope but... Dont go for the 7950Gx2,The 7900gtx SLI smokes it at anything under 1600 x 1200. you can check that here at the Futuremark "Hall of Fame" http://www.futuremark.com/community/halloffame/ 7900gtx & Conroe@4843Mhz = 16357 on 3Dmark 06 7950Gx2 & conroe@4942Mhz =12459 3Dmark06 7900gtx all the way | ||

| If you got 500 to spend on the CPU alone and insist on an AMD chip, I would go with the AM2 X2 4000+ Windsor core w/ 2 x 1MB L2 cache ($399 at the egg). The memory bandwidth you gain from DDR2 is well worth it if you get the right RAM. Of course, if you can wait a few months until the 65nm CPUs come out then I would likely go that route. Edit: These AMD chips OC well too but obviously won't get you the clock speeds of a Conroe, but pair it with good RAM (I suggest DDR2 800 or higher, preferably Corsair if using the Asus M2N32-SLi mobo) and a good OCing mobo (the aforementioned Asus or one of the DFIs that are coming out in small steps it appears. Believe it or not a Foxconn board will take 3rd place for OCing) and I am sure you will be pleased with the performance. Last edited by godfoot; 28-August-06 at 01:39 PM. | ||

Do you mean Dual Core? Conroe is the way forward my friend, forget everything that you might have heard about AMD being better... an E6600 is better than all AM2 CPU's and its well within a $500 limit. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Well, I haven't gotten to the thread where this guy got banned yet (but I am sure there is good reason), but first he wanted an AMD processor(s) and even went so far as to stress that in the original post, and then gets afronted when I give him advice? Better he is gone I suppose. | ||
