Default when to flash BIOS

I'm installing a xp2400+ cpu for an Abit KX7-333r motherboard and support at Abit says I will need a new BIOS. Do I need to flash the new BIOS BEFORE I install the cpu? I've been trying to do this and I always get "CMOS checksun error" each time, then it defaults to old settings. Thx!

You need to install it before you put in the new cpu.

If you are getting a checksum error, clear the CMOS prior to flashing the new bios. And do it prior to the new CPU install.

thanks for all the help, but I cannot confirm that I'm doing this correctly. I did the jumpers to clear the CMOS, booted into dos, flashed the bios and it appears to worked correctly, but when it's done and I reboot I still get "CMOS checksum error". When I flash correctly, won't the new version number appear at the bottom of screen during bootup? It does not.

Generally you'll need to clear the CMOS after you flash it as well. Then enter the BIOS and load defaults. Reboot. Then enter the BIOS and make needed changes. And yes...the new number should show up on the bottom of the screen. Unless a programmer got really sloppy.

If a flash has not been successful the flash program will let you know.

Make sure the BIOS image your using is the correct one for your board. Not all models with the same number are the same. Check the revision number as well. Usually the rev. # is printed on a pci slot or somewhere on the board itself.

Thanks! There is one and only one BIOS for this motherboard when using the xp2400 cpu, as far as I can find at Abit, and its ID numer (ends with "AJ") has not show up yet at the bottom of my bootup screen.

So, the order to do this is: Clear the CMOS, boot into dos, flash the BIOS, turn the machine off, clear the CMOS again, (put the new cpu in here?), reboot, go into the BIOS and load the needed changes for the new cpu. And nevermind if it says "CMOS checksum error" along the way.

I was hoping to be able to confirm that I had flashed the BIOS correctly BEFORE putting in the new cpu. This Abit motherboard means major surgery to switch cpu's. Thanks again!
