Well first off it voids your warrenty ,and leaves the cpu die unprotected.

That said ,removing it is usually good for around 3 - 5c lower temp.

Ive decided Not to remove it on mine ,cause Im not looking to do an potential death run O.C's on my Cpu...

I did it on a 754 3200+and got another 50MHZ OC or so... it worked great!

Until I swapped the heat sink one night and cracked the core

Oh no! Poor you! (kidding) Some of us have air cooling, where my idle is nearly twice your load! (that part is serious though...)

Make sure the mounting mechanism will still work. It should work for most, but some require that specific spacing with the IHS attached.

In all honesty removing the IHS is probably the single easiest thing you can do to get a dramatic reduction in temps, but IMO the cons outweigh the pros, at least for newer CPUs. Also, don't expect the increase in MHz to make a noticable performane difference.

I did this to my opty 165 & it couldn't have been easier, you'll have to modify the post between the mobo & waterblock, so the waterblock sits lower to make contact with the die (see project big ugly).
It lowers your idle temps a little but you'll really notice it on your load temps & you'll gain a few extra mhz on your o.c ....

DUDE!! I know your like everyone else and like to push your rig as far as possible but imo there is absolutely NO POINT in removing your IHS when you are getting load temps of 29c!!! I mean they are really good temps as it is!!!

Is your Opti 165 OC'ed? If so even better if its loading at 29c!!! To be honest mate I use an Opteron 165 in my gaming rig and OC the t*ts of it lol right now I have mine at 315*9 - 2835ghz with 1.5v over the core and it loads at around 48c and i am happy enough with that!!! I allways think the alarm bells should be ringing with temps any higher 55c.

But in conclusion go ahead and waste your time removing the IHS and take the risk of putting it in an early grave if you want, But all for the sake of dropping an extra celcius or so it hardly seems worth it!!! Plus the fact even if you can push another 50Mhz outa it you ain't going to notice ANY difference in performance......you may get a slightly better bench but notice i said SLIGHTLY

Your call dude

If you want to do it, i want to give you a few tips

1st. Use a razor blade from a shaver, and be careful, remove the glue, and goddamnti, take your time

2nd, remove IHS from core
If it dose not come off, thares still glue holding the IHS down, so go ahead, and retrace over with the blade

Next, go and pull the IHS off, clean it with alcohol, drill a hole in it, and attach it to keyring

After, clean the core off, smear thermal paste on teh core with your fngertip, and hope for the best

It's pretty simple. Just take the razor out of a Bic disposable razor. Slowly and gently cut the rubber seal by slicing around the IHS. Just go slow so you don't cut too deep. You can feel when it cuts through then try pulling off the IHS but don't pull too hard, some of the seal might have not been cut all the way so finish cutting parts that won't come off. Repeat these steps till the thermal condom comes off that was protecting your cpu from great temps. Make sure you remount the waterblock nice and even too.

Yea. Anoterther helpful hint is cut the 4 corners first then find the little opening on teh side and slide teh razor in and cut all the way around. Cut a second time and then it should just pop off. If your worried about cracking the core. You can get some little things like they have on socket A chips.

It really isn't too hard, just go easy and slow, there is no sense trying to save five minutes only to ruin a perfectly good processor. the glue is pretty thick, thicker than you would think, so if the IHS doesn't start to move don't try to just pry it off, keep on slicing. That and make sure you have the money to buy a new one if you do something stupid (break off a pin, crack the chip, cut through one of those little things spaced around the core when you cut too deep) because if you don't have the ability to replace it you don't have any buisness in risking such an easy death for your computer (just my opinion, but think about it for a moment) but you can expect decent drops in temp, and really huge improvements in temp ramping up and down (my load temp is reached nearly instantly, and when I idle temps drop nearly instantly as well)

Great TIP!!!

Yea, I use the soft side of velcro. You can get little 1/4" diameter round velcro pieces from any where (walmart, kmart, grocery stores, hardware stores). Then I place them on each corner of the chip.

Lightbulb Re: IHS Removal!

This is all dependent on what kit your using but this is what i had to do when i removed my IHS on my opty 165 using a Swiftech Apex ultra H20 setup....

If your using a H20 set up you'll need to shorten the post's that sit between the mobo & waterblock mounting plate to allow for good contact as the cpu die sits lower than the IHS.
Also watch out for the clamping bolts hitting the mobo tray & pushing your mobo up, if this happens then your gonna need to drill two 6mm holes in your mobo tray to allow the bolts to pass through.

The DFI boards and the Danger Den TDX fit just fine. No modifications required.
