Default noob questions about oc;ing

ok, i have an abit kx7 333 mobo and i have questions about that, but first i have questions about general oc'ing.

when you talk about mulitpliars like 219 X 11.9 or whatever what is the first number? when i go into my bios it only says multipliar x 12.

and how do i adjust the mulipliar?

now for the questions about my mobo, it will let me adjust the voltage but it will only let me select what i want my proc to run at (1500+ thru 2200+, i have a 1900+) , it wont let me adjust my multipliar or fsb. is there anyway i can adjust these specifically?

thx

Usually by buying a good nforce2 board.

um, like hawklen said a good nforce 2 mobo will let you adjust the multi. Most of the time you "unlock" the processor itself.

The first number you refer to is the FSB, when you look in your bios you will see 133 (in reality, 266). To get you clock speed take your fsb 133 * multi (11 or whatever) 11, so you get 133* 11 = 1463 (1.4 Ghz).

so to overclock raise the fsb or multi to a higher level. Typically you lower the multi but if you already at 11 you don't need to. Just raise you fsb as high as you can. As soon as you start running into problems, thats when you have hit the wall and can't push it any farther.

The first number is your Frontside bus. It's in megahertz. The second number is the multiplier. Multiply the 2, and you will get the MHZ speed for your processor. You should be able to adjust the multiplier in the BIOS.

what type of bios do you have??

Honestly we're all telling you the truth. To overclock means to make the computer run at a faster clock speed and you do that by changing the fsb and multi.

try updating your bios and where are you looking. I have a feature similar to that but thats not where i make my changes.

try flashing your bios and did you actuallly build this rig or did somone else build it for you. Click Here to download a utility thatll update your bios to latest version. Just click step by step close ALL programs and itll do it for you.

also if u run into ANY problems flashing it as in it suddenly stops saying it cant flash or something like that. Restart enter bios and check for a option that disables flash.

Some viruses corrupt your bios by flashing corrupted materials and that option helps stop it by disabling that type of flash all together.

once you install the bios mess around with your fsb try to get it faster but still boots up and everything run smooth. Your multipler seems good now and once u hit a fsb u cant go ne higher with try uping ur multiplier slowly

but always remember to check ur cpu temp or u end up wearing this thing down bit by bit

I gotta OC'ing question too. I'm familiar with P4 Intel overclocking, but new to the AMD market. I'm an Apple guy building a PC rig for games, and was wondering what my settings would be for my rig to get it to an AMD 3200+

AMD Barton 2500+
Corsair XMS Memory PC3200
Abit nForce2 board (NF7-S)

I'd also like to tweak the memory if possible.

you got an easy one there g money the chips use the same multiplier....
the only change for the clock speed is to take the fsb from 166 up to 200 hope you got some good cooling though....
as for your memery, keep it in sync/100%/1:1 whichever the setting is on your board....
for you ram just keep the timings tight 2-2-2-6 is good and easy with the ram you have...

No you dont, you can up the front side bus. Not much of an overclock. Unlocking an XP (thoroughbred) is very hard. If its a pal. core, its easy. If you buy any nforce2 board, you can adjust the multiplier from the stock (say 12.5) down..

Also if you gonna be doing FSB overclocking only, you should keep the FSB under 190Mhz. Your board doesn't have any PCI locks. Staying below 190 will ensure your PCI and AGP don't get clocked too much. All this is not applicable to most NF2 boards as they have PCI locks.

G-$$,
If your cooling can handle it , drop the multiplier down to 10, and bump that FSB a little at a time, up to 220-230 ....makes for a faster 3200+

Okay, total n00b to OC here, let me get this straight. To OC, you want to lower your multiplier and raise your FSB. Correct?

Correct. Generally you want to drop your multiplier pretty low and increase the FSB. Higher FSB = good.

Good.
There's much better but I probably wouldn't be allowed to use it.

one thing i have noticed with my system is that having a hgher FSB stuff just loads faster... meaning my taskbar items, and heck even the system boots faster. from pressing power button to Login..18 seconds, from login to idle. 4 seconds.....as 166 fsb it took over 30 seconds and i even have themed boot and login screens, also remember to bump voltage up a little. i am running 1.7v on my Core, 1.8 on my chipset (volt mod, 50k pot)2.9 on my ram. most stable SOB i have ever seen been on for two weeks now....runs better everyday.
