Default AMD OC Suggestions?

I want to see what you pimps would think to be the best set up for amd OC'ing....

Like I've said before, I'm kicking around the idea of making another tower as a LAN server, but I could just relegate this box to being a server and running the new one as the gamer.

So, gimme the basics.... case, mobo, cpu, ram, HD's, gfx, coolers, et cetera...

EDIT: Ballpark budget of $1500... can go + / - $250

I am in the process of building up a game rig now. I am using the

Abit NF7-S (rev 2) MOBO,
1 GB OCZ 3500 mem,
XP1700 JIUHB,
truepower 500watt PSU,
NVIDIA 5900FX Ultra vid card,
60GB maxtor HDD (8meg Buffer),
D-Tek's White Water WB
dual shroud D-Tek Heater Core
Danner Mag 3 pump using a bay res.

also thinking about adding a chipset waterblock to it also. But that can be added later. Haven't decided on a case yet, but I have most of the parts in hand or on order now.

any mobo with a better than average review and the NEW Nforce2 400 chipset, the given XP-1700 T-Bred B, and just a decent cooler since with a chip that inexpensive, it would be kinda dumb to throw a heatsink on it that might cost more than the cpu does... ...well, thats MY logic anyway and its not negotiable...

your best bet is to look and see EXISTING setups that have achieved what you want on as little money as possible, then you will have a pseudo-guarantee that what you are getting WILL do what you want and perform where you need it to

Well, this is a bump... I'd like some more opinions, but the two I've gotten so far make sense to me.

Well, this MSI baord is decent for overclocking. Wish the fsb went pass 200, but still, 200mhz on this 133 cpu ain't bad.
XP2000+ @ 2.1ghz 400mhz bus

Oh, and another pic. I beleive I havent enough of them in various threads here.

I just put together a gaming machine about two months ago and minus a WC setup came in around $800. I know alot of the prices are even cheaper now.

AMD XP 1700+ Tbred Rev B Oc'd to 2407MHZ
Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev2.0
Corsair XMS Twin 256 Memory
Maxtor 80G 8MB buffer HD
Thermalright SLK800 HS
Vantec Tornado CPU Fan
Asus CDR Drive
Enermax 460W PSU
Radeon 9500Pro 128Mb Graphics card

From the research I've done you can put together a decent WC setup from dangerden or D-tek for under $200.

I'd think you can easily accomplish your goals for well under $1500.

Good luck.

Okay here's what I'm looking at right now:

Abit NF7-S rev.2 board...
Either a 1700+ tbred b or a 2500+ barton
Either 2x256 or 2x512mb PC3500 GeiL Golden Dragon
ThermalRight SLK-800a
Vantec Thermo-flow 80mm temp adjustable
Case from mnpctech (that'll be in august... )

And its not quite what you think, either.

I got some plans..

As for the "missing" items, they'll get carried over from my current rig... except for the HD, perhaps, because of XP's tendency to cling to the hardware its on... perhaps I'll dive for a WD Raptor drive...

AthXP 2000+ Palo w/ retail sink
Asus a7n8x deluxe
512mb kingston "value" ram (clock changes almost daily. )
WD 80GB SE
Radeon 9500 Pro
Pioneer Slot DVD
LiteOn 48x CDRW
Antec 350W PSU (going to swap that for a Vantec Stealth 520W later on)
D-Link air wireless 802.11b (The b is for bad. )

"AMD XP 1700+ Tbred Rev B Oc'd to 2407MHZ"

How the hell did you get it to that speed? What FSB are you running? What Multiplyer are you running? What Voltage are you running it at? NICE OVERCLOCK!!!

Excellent choices. I'd go with the Barton 2500+ or maybe a Athlon 2600+/333. Both are about the same price now and the 2600 is faster out of the box. The 1700 is a bargain and overclocks like a rabbit. But I think you'd be much better off with a faster clock rate to start with. Especially if you want to game with it. And the 2600 doesn't suck in the OCing dept.

Don't think you can go wrong with the Golden Dragon ram. Mine performs very well. But now I've got these two little red eyes that watch me now from the inside of my case. It's kinda eerie.

I'd probably run a screamer on the SLK-800 like a tornado or delta. Then tone it down through a rheostat when just surfing.

I certainly can't argue with the case choice.

Banana Boy,

Thanks. FSB is running at 438. 219X11 at 1.75 volts. Specifically, it's a JIUHB DLT3C 310XPMW. Best $70 bucks I ever spent!

I did blow my first PSU with it. Was a Antect Smart 350W. Put in a Enermax 460W a couple of weeks ago and it's back up to speed!

Whats the specs of the rest of your system. After you stated your 350W PSU Antec blew, that makes me think my PSU just doesn't have enough ummppph to push my computer anymore. My Specs are below in my Sig, please state everything your running so I have an idea. BTW can you please run SiSoft Sandra and click CPU Info and find out how many watts it is using. Thanks.

Thanks Hawk and thanks rcurtis. 70w aint half bad, I'm @ 62watts @ 1909mhz. Ummm rcurtis how did you fry your PSU if your running less than me? this is rather scarey. Although that would explain for the rather stinky smell coming from the PSU. It's probably nearing its peak wattage or something.

Well the only thing I can think of is the overclock killed it off or I just got a bad PSU. It was only about a month old when it let go. In hindsight I do remember the rail voltage jumping around quite a bit the last 2 days of it's life. If your voltages are steady your probably ok. To be sure you PSU is sized correctly check out this calculator and you'll know if your maxing out your current PSU or not.

Hrmm, according to that, I should be running a 450W powersupply, and my old one should be on fire right now. But, its steady voltage, very very minor fluctuations. Ive had it for 2 1/2 years, good ol' Deer 300W PSU

According to the calculator thingy I only need a 300W PSU... Hum.

Guess my Antec SmartBlue 350W isn't pushing itself very hard, now is it?

Ah well, growth room is on its way shortly... (520W Vantec )

I calculated and it said i need around 340watt + the power of my videocard which is like 50watts or something, so thats 390watts. my PSU is rated @ 350watts RMS, 431 peak, so yeah its time to upgrade i'd say.

Outcast, i'd look at another fan for your slk800a, the thermo-flow doesn't have a lot of top end.
I'd look at at the TT smart fan 2, lots of featuers for control and powerful, only downside is that it's orange, but then again that's what vinyl dye is for....
