Default Amd 64 X2 3800+ Vs Amd 64 X2 4200+

The 3800+ is $322, while the 4200+ is $400. Which one is a better value, and why. The only difference I know of is that the 3800 is a 2.0, while the 4200 is a 2.2... I don't really know what that would mean as well, since AMD is different then Pentium, and this is going to be my first AMD. God bless.

I would go with the 3800+. Even though it is "only" 2Ghz, I personally don't think another 200mghz is worth $88. Besides, you could just overclock it. BTW AMD pwns Pentium!

Is the only real difference 200 mhz? My friend wanted me to get the 4200, but it seemed pretty pointless for an extra 80 when I'm going to be able to clock it way over 2.5 with the set-up I'm getting.

The only reason I would get a 4200+ is for the extra multiplier. They are easier to get stable @ 2.7 or so because of this. I can get my X2 3800+ stable at 2.7, but with aircooling it's way too hot with ~1.7 volts.

Your forgetting the 4800 has a higher clock speed at a lower voltage which allows for more OCing ability as well the 4800 and 4400 have 1mb cache per core where as the 3800, 4200, 4600 have 512kb. How ever since your on a budget go with the 3800. You actually just missed a deal I had on my 4400.

They're currently going for $497 on Newegg...

For a couple bucks less, you can get an OEM (no heatsink or Retail package) Opteron 175, which is going to overclock WAY better:

Well, lets say I end up getting the 3800+ with the setup that I'm intending to get with I guess minor changes. What could I clock the speed to at the most.

I dunno dude, it depends on the temps in your case, the cooler you get, the processor itself, the motherboard, the cleanliness of the power coming from your power supply, etc...you have to find that max yourself.

I would say that the max stable with a decent CPU cooler will be 2.5-2.55. I can hit above that because I splurged on a Zalman 9500...

I wasn't saying that an OCed 3800 was any match for an OCed 4400, but just that you could squease much more juice than you may realize.

I really hope you don't mind me kind of stalking you with my questions about the 9500 and 3800 X2, its just that I have those picked out especially, so I'd want to know as much about them and how well they work together......And since I already have the 9500, I must say it is rather beautiful....like a giant copper flower........that was rotated 90 degrees and has a blue-LED lit 90mm fan on it.

Hehehhe... actually, its kind of sexy, in a computer-fetish kind of way. Well, I have a thing for heavier women... no further questions. Actually, yeah, I do have some more questions. Is that the best fan you can get for overclocking within a reasonable price that is still rather silent? I'm fine spending sixty-bucks if that allows me to overclock this living s*** out of my computer without problem.

I do believe that it is THE if not, then tied with like one or two other fans, best air only cooling. But as far as loudness to performance ratio, it IS the best....

...atleast, last review I read said so...
