Default Building a gaming system- processor recommendations for OCing

My budget is under $2000. I plan on building aw ater cooled system for gaming and work... will probably set up a nice overclock as well.

I want the best ratio of performance, ocing, and price. I still can't decide on single or dual core cpu. I was thinking of getting a 3700+ san diego since I heard it was well suited for what i'm looking for.

My watercooling setup will include a 2x120mm black ice xtreme or maybe 3x120 bix.... so I have alarge cooling capacity. Was then thinking of getting a dfi sli+dr or expert motherboard. I think I may wait until next month for the next series of gpus as well.

Get a Socket 939 Opteron. Most of them can hit 3.0Ghz on air and run it 24hr stable. I would go with the 148 because it's got an 11x multiplier and 1MB cache (just like the 3700+ you're looking at). It should cost about the same.

Do opterons perform as well as their equivalent speed in an amd 64?

Well, my Opteron performs better than an FX57 and only cost 200 bucks. Hard to beat that. However, I think you may be on the tail end of the Opteron craze and would be hard pressed to find a highly overclockable stepping. Not sure what is being released right now.

Actually some of the newer batches of the CAB2E 0540 are out performing the CABYEs. I have both a CABYE and CAB2E and my CAB2E outperforms my CAYBE. CAB2E runs 2.8-2.9 at stock vcore. Best bet is to check ebay for some steppings. If you are forced to I would try Monarch.

Thanks for the responses

So the opterons are really the way to go... I would get a dual core- so does overclocking potential increase by any significant amount above an opteron 165? How futureproof are these compared to lets say a amd x2 or fx chip?

How are the opteron 165 CCBWE steppings? I see them all over ebay.

I think those are the good ones. If I were you, i'd got with something with a higher multiplier, like a 170.

An Opteron IS an Athlon 64...it is just made of choice silicon for stability in Workstation and Server applications. The core is basically an FX core.

Are there any comparrisons between a 165 and 170?
