hey, i'm thinking about buying this 2.2 opteron off of monarch but i don't know what the stepping code is and i don't know if what it has is good or bad. it says E4 stepping but i didn't think that was the actual stepping code, idk maybe i'm wrong. can someone please help me? if E4 is the stepping code could i still overclock well?

Unless somebody can correct me, the E4 stepping codes so widely discussed on the Interweb focus around:

Ã‚â€¢ CABYE (what I have, 2.9Ghz stock v. on water)
Ã‚â€¢ CAB2E
Ã‚â€¢ CABNE
Ã‚â€¢ CABGE

CABYEs, CAB2Es and CABNEs are the ones to go for, with CABGE not giving as much overclocking performance. Still, those chips are still hitting 2.8Ghz, FX-57 speeds...

As we've said many times, there's no garuntee what stepping you will recieve, I suppose you could email the retailer and ask them for a specific stepping, but I doubt large businesses like Monarch would do that for you.

so would it be worth buying? i could still overclock no matter what stepping code i get with it right? since its an opteron

Yes, any of them would be good. Even if you hit "only" 2.8Ghz, the computer will still be wicked fast. I bet with some more tweaking, 3.0Ghz isn't that hard to hit on the "crappy" stepping.

I love my 148 from Monarch, 2.92 with ease...
I think my kids pc needs a 144 now since they are same price as the 3000's.

btw from the looks of your sig you may want to upgrade you PSU i don't think it could hold the load nor would i even try it personally.

Newegg has some Mushkin DDR 550 512Mb sticks for 83.81 shipped that would help you break 3Ghz with ease, 3.025 with 275 fsb and 1:1 , @ 2.5-4-4-8 .. FYI .. I ordered a pair for my rig and giving my DDR 500 to my kid for his rig.
