Default Overclocking question

Alrigty, I have an Asus A8v mobo, and i am going to overclock an AMD 64 that is currently running at 2.0GHz. I want to overclock it to about 2.2 GHz, if I ws to buy a blue orb II, or any other high end heatsink and fan, would this be a possibility.

Hi robo gnome

WELCOME TO PIMPRIG!

I haven't played with the AMD64's but I reckon that you'd probably be able to get 200MHz on stock cooling
I'm sure that with a better HSF, it'll be a breeze (no pun intended)

The welcome wagon's a' coming! brace yourself for plenty of helpful advice!

Thank you for the warm welcome,

okay, its good to know i'm not aiming too high, i'm fairly new with overclocking as you can guess.

well If anyone knows of any better heatsink and fan lemme know, I'm dying to get rid of this stock fan cause lemme tell ya, it is N-O-I-S-E-Y.

For overclocking purposes I suggest that you get one of the leading heatsinks (thermalright/zalman/etc.) they are worth the extra $$$.

I have this one - ThermalRight XP-90 and it's great.

Welcome to PR!

Robo Gnome,

With stock cooling, you should be able to pull out about 10-15% on you overclock, which would put you at about 2.3Ghz. Like everyone else, I would suggest a fairly high dollar HSF to really get some good OC action. This past weekend, I pulled out my Tt Bigwater system and went back to air cooling with an AeroCool HighTower HT-101 and my temps dropped 10F!

Haven't tried overclocking yet, but I'm sure I will soon. The Aerocool HT-101 retails at $60 bucks, but I got for less than half on eBay.

Welcome to PimpRig robo gnome.
definately go for a high end cpu cooler like the zalman 7700 or such.
As tempting as it may beto save a little money, go for the very best cooler you can get.
After you get a better cpu cooler you will find that your ram will eventually be the limiting factor in your potential overclock.
I've got a zalman cnp7700 copper cooler on an Amd64-3000 winchester.
when I oc it to 2551Mhz it only runs at 38 -41 c

I'm using the zalman cnps9500 on my opteron 146, and commonly see 45C at 3.0GHZ. Fine by me and it's quieter than the PSU.

Alrighty, in that case, i guess the Thermaltake Blue orb 2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835106069 is a safe bet, (unless theres something better.) its winning awards left and right, and i swear by thermaltake's PSUs, so its definatly a good brand (and it retails at about 50$). not to mention i'm a total whore for LEDs.

OOOOoooo, and my last concern, My PSU is 480 watts, thats enough juice to do some significan't overclocking, isn't it? I have a GeForce 6800 so that takes up alot of juice, but its 480 watts for cripes sake, if my math is right thats 40 amps (power divided by energy, 480w/12v). is there anyway i can go about checking or should i just play it by ear?

holy crap resq47, i just checked out the zalman cnps9500, that is one crazy looking HSF, i wonder if its better then the blue orb 2, right now i'm thinking the cnps9500 has the blueorb 2 beat.

Don't go crazy on looks. It's all about having a big ass heat sink like the XP-120 .

Also if you're oc'ing that low just get yourself some descent thermal paste and stick with stock. What a64 proc are you going for?

The Thermaltake Blue Orb II is a rip-off of the Zalman 7700 series, in fact Zalman has announced that they will start legally pursuing various companies that have copied Zalman designs. Also, the Zalman 7700 series still kicks the Blue Orb II in some tests I read.

Skip the Blue Orb, the Zally is the best combo of quiet and performance.

The only other one I'd reccomend would be the thermatake Big Typhoon, but I don't know how "Quiet" it would be, but it's at the top of the charts performance wise.

well, The whole reason I'm doing this is cause i want to get rid of my stock HSF cause it's too noisy, so i figured i would get a sweet HSF, make my computer near silent, and then i'd be able to do some serious overclocking. (2 birds one stone yayyyy!) And i figured since this is the first time i'm overclocking i'd set my goal low. Right now i'm really thinking about the Zalman CNPS9500 LED Ultra Quiet CPU Cooler http://www.frozencpu.com/cpu-zal-19.html, overtime i'll just overclock my cpu more and more.

Oh yeah, my CPU is an AMD 64Athlon 3200 series, 939 pins. 2.0 GHz and i thinks it's a winchester core i'm not sure

and holy crap the xp-120 is huuuge, if i was to get that, I would need to get a fan for it, right.

So i guess my question now is, is should i get the zalman CNPS9500 or a Zalman 7700 series. Price doesn't matter to me, and i need to get my cpu overclocked badly cause 2.0GHz sucks, and would a 480w powersource be enough.

Yes but you can't go far wrong with a 80 mml or 120 mml vantec stealth fan (it's what I use and I can't hear it). I suppose you could even undervolt them if you wanted some serious silence.

Newegg.com and Mwave.com sell the 9500 cheaper than any other vendor. As for the XP-120, Thermalright introduced the SI-120, an update of the XP-120 that answers some incompatibility issues on certain motherboards. You would still need to buy a 120mm fan for it though.

Edit: If you overvolt your RAM, go with the 7700. If you don't, go with the 9500. As for the power supply, I have an Antec Neopower 480W powering an overclocked AMD Athlon 64 Winchester running at 2.4GHz.

alright, so my choices are now between the zally 9500 and thermalright's SP-120.

If it boils down to that, i'm guessing the SP-120 is the way to go, cause 120mm can be faily quiet and cheap, not to mention its heatsinks are HUGE, and it seems like it handles the heat better than the zally.

Well, i'm not planning on buying anything till after christmass i guess i still got time to decide.
