| Well Im on my next build im doing, I am planning on using these things. AMD X2 4400+ / Opteron 170 Asus A8n32 16x SLi Corsair 3500LL 2 x XFX 7800GTX SiNtek 600W SLi PSU Lian-Li PC777 (Snail Case) already have it Danger Den water cooling (not kit) but custom built by me My question is, I was really thinking bout getting the x2 4400+ until i saw the Opto 170 and notice some peeps on this board were using it. What CPU would be better for me since im going to use it for gaming and to learn how to OC as well. Mind u that I am planning on using water cooling for the proccesor so heat wont be an issue. | ||

Since your using watercooling I would say go for the X2. I have a 4400 and a 146 Opteron. I however am selling my X2 need the money for an upcoming project. It is a very good chip and kicks some butt. Had it up to 2.75Ghz benching. With the ASUS you are limited on your overclocking ability a little bit and the Opteron and X2 would prolly clock the same. I would rather have 2 cores than 1 core at the same speed. Since you are a beginner overclocking I recommend you stay with the ASUS and not go DFI. The DFI boards have a super advanced bios and you would hafta study it for a year to know what every little option does.

| It really all depends. If your just gonna play games and try your hands at OC'ing, I say go for the Opt 170. I bought the X2 4800 but I tend to do alot of other things all at the same time and play games occasionally. On the otherhand, if you plan on having this cpu for quite a while (more than a year), I would get the X2. In a years time there will be alot more software written to take advantage of both cores. | ||

If there is going to be alot of software that is going to be made in the future for both cores, why do u prefer the X2 over the opto? Thx for your help. BTW, I do have an X2 3800 machine which I use for video editing.

| 2 cores, 1 core. 2 cores, 1 core. I think it's pretty obvious. Now a dual core Opteron would be different. But that's not what he was asking. I guess I could be mistaken. No flame intended. My 4800 does's everything Great. I just recoded a new DVD today and it took 24 minutes and the DVD was playing. It play's Quake4 at 1600x1200 High Quality & 4xAA. It multitask's like crazy, much better than my old P4 4GHz PC. It's the fastest machine I've ever had. I've had a computer since the 1980's (commodore64) and I know since then I've easily spent $30,000. My X2 is smokin fast. When I get a 2nd 7800GTX I may have to call the Fire Department. | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Not having a go at you slaymate, but the opteron 165,170,175 are all dual core. kind of makes your argunets against them a bit redundant. I will be buying a 170 or 175 for my new gaming rig and OC the crap out of it. also Pupp4_Kick3R if you have room in your case I am looking at the Scyth Ninja heatsink. I just need to find out if it will fit on the board. | |

My mistake I thought the 170 came in a single core. I didn't research it 1st just because the Thread title lead me to believe there was a real choice. If the Opteron is dual core then that's the choice. Rep point for the lesson.
