Hi all, I just joined up after using this forum for a reference for a little while.
Below is the rig that I am building over the next month or so:

Opteron 170
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
1Gb OCZ EL 3200 Dual DDR
Dual Sparkle 7800 GT
Silverstone 600 W PSU
Black Thermaltake Shark.

I will be using all my old peripherals for a start and upgrade them as I go. Another gig of RAM is also on the books in the future.

This setup should allow me plenty of headroom for OCing.

Any advice or comments on things I could do better would be appreciated, bearing in mind that I am already at my budget limit.

well you should start looking in the case modding section here.
Its easier to mod before you put your system together.

hope to see that shark case gutted and filayed.

Yo painful! My spec for my new system is almost close to yours except for the graphics card and CPU. Well i was thinking bout getting an X2 4400+. Until i was browsing new egg and saw the 170 OPTO for a cheaper price. I've never used an Opteron b4 but i do have an x2 3800+. Could someone tell me whats the Diff Pros/Cons of an Opteron 170 Vs. an X2 4400+

the 939 flavor opterons are baisically rebadged Athlon FX series Cpus..... you can pretty much guess what that means.

I have not built a system for a while because I tend to spend big a play happily for a few years until it is to crusty to play new games properly. I hadn't heard of the Opteron chips until I was reading through Overclockers Forums. There is heaps of really good info over there for someone like me who has not done a lot of OCing.

It seems that every second one is about the benifits of Opteron over X2

It basically comes down to the following points:
1) The Opteron is henerally cheaper for the same clock speed (in Australia anyway)
2) All Opteron dual cores all have 1Mb L2 cach per core
3) Opterons overclock much better than X2
4) Opterons have higher bandwidth than X2

on them as well i think you may find that hitting the 3ghz barrier and beyond is not too hard. necro spikeshot ct planet and pharoh (sry if i left anyone out) have all done it with many ppl converting and just not posting up yet.

as well as most other upgrading pimps here, its just too good to get a 900 dollar ish proc speeds for under 200 bucks
