Yeah so anyway a month ago my battleship steady main desktop hung while running and refused to boot. I beat on it and tried everything I could, swapping proc's with spares, pullng memory etc... No go. At least I didn't let the smoke out. I've spent the time using a spare box, missing my normal desktop, and plugging away with an old cranky inspiron 8100. Then I ran accross the PR opteron 146 threads...

Yesterday I ordered an opty 146 OEM kit and DFI Lan Party UT NForce4 Ultra-D from monarch. I've been an OC addict since I burned up a cyrix and pushed my K6-2 to 450, and then beat my head against a thunderbird that NEVER was stable. My day to day setup on the dead box was 191x12.5 on an M2500+, decent numbers for me anyway and it held up well for 24/7 use for 2.5y. By 24/7 I mean dnetc and folding...

So my big nagging concern has been getting things running and not having a PCIe video card to enjoy things with. My old 9500np softmodded and then OC'd just wouldn't hack it since I can't jam the damn thing in anywhere. So anyway, what's the point if you can't play some stuff, right? Oh, and BTW that SmartPower 400W brick that came in the Antec 1080II isn't gonna cut it (I verified today through a bunch of threads). I'm not stupid enough to forget that I'll go into spontaneous psychosis if faced with a box'o'components that I can just sit and look at. That usually makes me go pay too much for substandard parts I can scrounge locally. Screw that, the web is here!

So, tonight I ordered up:

OCZ 520W super PSU
eVGA GeForce 6800 GS 256MB
WD2000JS 200GB SATAII HD

I'll have to wait a bit before I start filling it with DDR, the 1GB of XMS3500C2 and maybe a spare 512 stick will have to suffice for now. I really want 2GB in this box though, and I see an XMS 2GB set in my future (so I could really do 3GB total ). This freakin' thing will play solitaire so damned fast it's not funny...

Spent last night moving parts around and bringing a spare box online. I get to do it all again when the used NF-7 I bought gets here but wth...

My big decision right now is if I want to even mess with the stock HSF or go straight to an XP120 or 9500. I'm really tempted to go with better cooling first off, but I would like to be sure the XMS3500C2 will be happy on the opty for a while. Of course my wallet has been bleeding like a cut alky but again, wth.

eta - What's the recommended best starting settings for these 939 opty's on the DFI boards? I'm overloaded reading all the threads and can't remember where I saw what. I'm at #253 on the 939 thread on the street atm, ach....
