Default 3 friends, 3 CPU's, 3 gigs...

For those of you that have not heard there is a new CPU out that smokes for a super cheap price. With everyone going dual core I was giving it some thought but just heard alot of negitives on the added heat, low overclocks, and not super performance gains for the high price. So I asked planet and he linked me over to extremesystems.com where he told me to look into these 146 Opteron CPU's, so I did.

Within a day I wanted one. But, they were sold out at the time. I spread the word to my partner in overclocking crime SOLID and of course my bro Planet was also interested by now. We all decieded to try it... although I was the only one that needed a new CPU since they both had dual cores anyways but they wanted to have some fun along with me.

So, without further typing, I present to the members of PR the Opteron 146 socket 939 CPU. Stepping codes are CABYE0540FPBW...Cabye and Cayne are the good overclockers...and you can still get them.

The big plus, it don't take massive voltage increases to get them to 3.0 gigs. On stock voltages, they can hiit as much as 2.8...or the stock speeds of an FX-57. IT should be noted that I use water which lets me run a ltttle higher on the overclock if I tried, but Planet and Necro both used AIR to get 3.0...so that means its very possible.

Stock is 2.0 gigs

Check it out here...

If anyone was wondering how these bad boys are geting those speeds...well, it just so happens that these exact chips that all three of us got are direct silicon brothers of the smoking FX-57. And that means its made using strained silicon hense the high overclocks we all got.

The CPU can be had for about 190 dollars give or take from monarchpc.com If I was you and you wanted one, I would hurry very fast since these CPU's are going up in price now that the word is out. Their on ebay going for as much as 400+

So if you want a FX-57 for 200 bucks, now is your chance.

I hope you found this useful, SpikeShot, Planet, and Necro here making sure that PR members are in the know...

Spike

Any reason why CPU Z shows it as a 940 CPU? As far as I know, if it truely is a Socket 940 CPU, it shouldn't work in a Socket 939 motherboard. Are you running the ram and FSB 1:1? My ram is Corsair ValueSelect (I can't squeeze more than 235Mhz out of it), so I'm weary of weather it would be worth it for me.

It shows a socket 940, it is a socket 939.

The ram for me and SOLID I know is not a 1.1, SOLID us runing his ram at PC-4400 or close at 2.2.2.6 and I am runing at PC-4000 2.2.2.5...OCZ VX or BH-5 pimps...get some!

But, I ran Super PI at stock ram speeds which is why SOLID got higher. I will rerun when I get a moment to.

Im pretty sure its native 940 and the pretty much just took away a pin; did something to the core to make it work. As for ram dividers, you dont lose much performance at all with athlon 64's..at least that what I have seen.

They got rid of the ECC memory requirement by using 939 pin, thats all that extra pin does on a 940

They might not. I would check around different forums to see what boards they work with. BTW Thrasher2 why not some of that OCZ BA just reviewed? Also overclocking voids your warranty you may not be able to replicate our results as well we got one of the best steppings I know that i was able to hit like 2.75ghz with stock v core.

Damn You All!

I have been desperately trying to save up for a XFX 7800GTX video card. First, GK posts his review on that Sapphire card that flashes to 16 pipes which forces me to buy it, then you SOB's have to go and show me something like this. Now I'm another $205 short of getting my vid card. I have about the same board as CPT P so I guess it will work.

What's next... a monitor that you can tweak so it shows holograms? Great, then I'll never get my video card.
