Default 250$ budget for a processor.

Ok guys, the time has come to order the final piece to the puzzle that is my computer, or what it will be at least. I'm ordering my processor and I'd much appreciate all of the pimps around here's opinions. I have a 250 dollar budget and the processor has to be an AMD socket 754. What do you guys think? Links are appreciated.

Well this is a birthday gift. And I got a 250 dollar budget S&H not included. So as long as the price minus S&H is under 250 its no problem.

I'd actually say go with a 3200,as IMHO the 3400+ isn't worth it if you're just going to OC anyways. and that zalman HSF is the pwnage. good luck canus!

Thanks alot man. I might need some help getting through the BIOS. And I think someone mentioned that I would have to reformat my hard drive if I switched the processor from intel to AMD. Is this true?

May or may not be true - it doesnt have anything to do with the processor so much as the motherboard. The different chipsets require different drivers. Sometimes its no big deal, Windows finds the new hardware and you supply said drivers - boom your down the road without issue. Every once in a while its a friggin nightmare and after pissing with it for 45 minutes you give up and format the driver and start over. In my experience your odds are fairly good that it will be no big deal - however if your current install is long in the tooth then this is the perfect time and reason to do a fresh install.

There are ways you might get around formatting, but they usually end up with poor performance compared to a fresh format.

THe 3200+ is a good choice, the 3400+ might OC a bit higher though....but probably not a ton more.
All the newcastles seem to top out at 2.7-2.8GHZ max on socket 754 with air cooling, 2.4-2.6 being more the average.

Exactly. I'd recommend a reformat any time you have a major hardware change in your computer, or in other words, changing the motherboard. Like solid said, the completely new mobo, since the chances are that it'll have a different chipset than the previous one, deserves an HD reformat else you want less than optimal performance. And on a general reformatting note: I recommend reformatting at least every 6 months (i usually try for every 3) and defragging/deep virus and adware scanning once a week. Sorry for the itsy bitsy OT, and good luck canus!

Hmm. In the description for the 3400+ it says "The only windows compatible 64-bit processor." What does this mean? I use windows. Am I going to have to buy new software or is this even going to cause problems?

www.amd.com will have all the answers...

In short, no, it is backwords compatible with 32 bit Windows...

Hint, there is not 64 bit Windows being retail sold.

having $250 box to spend i would go get a 3000+ & a board with socket 939 this way you'll be ready for future update cpu for the board since the socket 754 is giong to stop production by the end of this summer.

Nah. I don't upgrade often enough for that to matter and I've already bought a motherboard.
