| Ok im buying a new M/b an cpu this week. And im trying to find out witch will be the beter overclocker overall. 3200+ or the 3000+ Im going to be using the DFI UT 250GB socket 754 motherboard. with 2 36 gig raptors in raid 0. Im going to go with the ThermalRight Xp 90 with a 92Mm tornado as my HSF. Im also limeted by my ram. Im running Kingston HyperX pc3500 witch is just overclocked 3200. Its 2x512 Dual Ch kit witch this wont mater because the cpu and motherboard dont run dual ch . So if anyone has anything comments pls feel free to give them.. Thanks pimps.. | Go with the 3200+, I think you will be pleased with it in the long run I would suggest the 3500+, but they are pretty pricey and not what I would call the "Best Bang for the Buck" Most any of the new AMD 64's can reach 2.6-2.7GHZ..but there a few things to consider! The 3000+ has a 9x Multiplier, so it needs a massive 300FSB (DDR 600!! or PC4800 speeds) to reach 2.7 GHZ The 3200+ has a 10x Multiplier, so it needs to reach 270FSB (DDR540, aproximatly PC4400 speeds)for the same 2.7GHZ The 3500+ has a 11x Multiplier, and would only need 240FSB (DDR 480, aproximately PC3700 speeds) to reach 2.7GHZ The Kingston Hyper X PC3500 (DDR 433) should be able to reach PC3700 speeds (DDR 466) without too much trouble, check out my AMD 64 OC guide for tips on how to do that. http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread.php?t=37951 Bottom line, with your ram, you should have no problems reaching 2.5+GHZ with the 3200+ A 3000+ would probably require new ram to reach 2.5+GHZ, or you could use memory dividers (Wich is not good for overall system performance) Last edited by $SOLID$ Necro; 21-February-05 at 07:03 PM.. | ||

| Well im look at newegg.com and the Socket 754 3200+ is 2.2Ghz so the multi would be 11x200 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-483&depa=1 And for 15 bucks more i could go with the OEM 3400+ witch is 2.4Ghz 12x200... http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...factory=BROWSE Or is this one beter? its the 3200+ with a 1Mb cache clawhammer core.. 10x200 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-443&depa=1 I REALLY need help now!! | Is there some reason you are planning on going socket 754? I had it in my head you were going 939! Please don't waste money on 754, it will severly limit your upgrade path down the road. Get the DFI LP NF-4 and a (90NM) 3200+ for socket 939!!!! With luck, it will reach 2.8-3.0GHZ with good air cooling The same 3200+ on socket 754 (130NM CPU) will only reach 2.5-2.7GHZ End of subject! ![]() EDIT: I realise now from a PM from Spikeshot why you are going socket 754, this is so you can use you current AGP card. Easy then, get the DFI LP NForce 3-250, and grab either the 3200+ or the 3400+ version, the mobile or "DTR" versions don't have heatspreaders and tend to overclock a bit better. They may cause a slight problem with the HSF if they don't make proper contact though, so that is something to look into first before you get one. Socket 754 AMD -64 comes in 3 Flavors of on die "Cache" Sempron 3100+ has a measily 256k...but this is not even on the list for consideration for you. AMD 64 2800+through 3400+ come in 512k AMD 64 3200+ through 3700+ have 1MB of cache (Depending on the core) All "Newcastle" cores have 512k All "Hammer" cores have 1MB BA did some testing, and it realy is a toss up between the 2 cores, the Hammer core is the older one with 1MB of cache, but does not have some "Tweeks" that were done to the more recently released 512k NewCastle cores that allow for higher OC speeds. If you have the money, get the 3400, they tend to OC a little higher than the 3200's Last edited by $SOLID$ Necro; 21-February-05 at 11:57 PM.. | ||

At stock speeds most motherboards regaurdless of brand, all perform within a few percent of each other. The difference comes in the OC features MSi and ASUS and Gigabyte (For example) all have some adjustments for the important items such as voltages, timings and CPU speeds. They are all competent boards for the average guy. DFI on the other hand will do all of the above, plus it has other settings in the Bios you will not find in most boards. For example, the new ASUS NForce 4 SLI board seems to max out around 300FSB, and I am sure MSI and Gigabyte will do about the same. The SLI Lan Party however, will go to 350FSB with a little bit of tweeking. The guys who are realy hardcore are reporting in excess of 400FSB! (DDR800) So..the real question would be, how far do you want to push it? ![]()

Yup i wanna run my old ram and my AGP X800Pro So i guess im going with the Socket 754 Dfi UT 250Gb with a 3400+And i mean by the time i wanna upgrade again.. They wont even be using 939 anyways.. In the next year there will be something diff and much more beter.. Thats just the way i look at it. Im not a cheap a$$ when it comes to upgrading.. Im just looking at how its going to benefit me now not down the road. Because the way things are going there will be new stuff out in a few months again. Like the dual cores who knows if its even going to be 939.. Might just be something new.. What if they make dual cores on a 940 board.. Or even just make a new socket.. Well thanks for all the help pimps!! Matt

| Well..that is part of the reason I said go to socket 939 now! it will support Dual Core CPU's, and allready takes PCI Express vid cards as you well know. You can easily sell the ATI on EBAY Socket 939 will not be changing for at least the next year or two, the next upgrade is going to be DDR-2, I realy don't expect anything on that till 2007 from the roadmaps I have seen. Some say they may skip it alltogether, and go with DDR3 when that comes out for Desktop use (Currently only in use on vid cards) | ||
