Default Overclocking Help

I have a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ NewCastle core, 512mb PC2700 ram, and a 256mb ATI Radeon 9600 video card, and stock cooling (im getting better air cooling soon).

My question is that when i change the system bus to anything over 252 x 10 the bios will reset everything to default and give a checksom error. And at 252 x 10 it will freeze when loading Windows XP Pro. Right now its running fine at 230 * 10 and 1.6v and it is running at 33 degress celcius just with this web browser open. when i changed it to 252 * 10 i change the vcore to 1.7v. So my question is, what is limiting me here? Is it my RAM or what?

Yea, probably your RAM.... PC2700 is designed to run on a 166 mhz FSB, so you've it running almost twice as fast as what it's designed for.. Also, you might want to consider upgrading your chipset cooling..
Right now I've got my 3000+ running at 2.3 ghz with no issue, sitting at 27°C (according to the mobo temp monitor)... I'm probably gonna try for 2.4 ghz a little later, we'll see though.

You can try using a memory divider, that should tell u if the CPU has more room left in it.

Try 3/4 or 1/2...it wont give optimal performance, but should be fine for testing.

Get yourself some ram based on the Samsung TCCD technology. I'm using PQI ram at the moment, but I don't think the brand really matters, as long as the cas latency is decent. I also have to agree that a chipset cooler is in order.

It should be...what motherboard do you have?

On my DFI Lan Party it is hidden away in the memory options, I believe it's called DRAM Ratio or something like that.

Did you install the Easytune software that came with the board? I think you can make alot of overclocking adjustments easily from Windows.

Sorry, I meant did you try to change the memory divider with Easytune? Give it a shot and let us know. Also, you will have to relax your memory timings manually and not by SPD and maybe up the voltage to them as well. I am really not that saavy with AMD O/C'ing so I can't help you out too much.

I looked at the divider with easytune and it says 191, im pretty sure thats a frequency not a divider so i dont know whats wrong there and i dont know nothing about memory times, this is the first time i have ever did any of this stuff.

it wasnt the same problem, because obviously if it was you wouldnt have had to ask another question, but instead just look at the replys.
