Default AMD Athlon XP 3200+ OC settings HELP

Has anyone overclocked Athlon XP 3200? I have overclocked mine at 210@11.5. Its been stable so far but I was wondering if anyone have ever reached the 2.8GHZ. I just need to know what settings I should have and what you have on yours with stable condition. Any comments will be appreciated.

Does your Athlon 3200+ have a locked multiplier?

Most of the new CPU's people have purchased in the last year are. If it is unlocked try raising the multiplier to 12, and go back to 200 on the FSB for 2.4GHZ.
From there I would start raising the FSB 2MHZ at a time and testing for stability with Folding@Home and/or Prime 95

There are adjustments you may need to make in the Bios, typically a bump in voltage to the cpu is required to reach much over 2.3GHZ, but you need to do a bit of research before you go poking around with em and get in too much trouble.

Adjusting memory timings and voltages can also enhance performance and stability..but that is another story all together.

1.8-1.85v is the max I normally will go with mid to high end air cooling, try to keep load temps under 50c.
You will probably find you are limited to around 1.75v with your cooler, the Aero 6 is showing fantastic results if you like that brand.

Your Asus motherboard and cooling are pretty average for overclocking, as is the 3200+ so don't expect miracles, but it might have a bit more in it.

Typical results for a good overclocking Athlon XP core with air cooling is more like 2.3-2.5GHZ, a few rare ones make it the 2.6-2.7GHZ range.

It takes ultra high end Watercooling, or some form of Cryo Cooling like a Vapochill to reach 2.8GHZ (Or more) with the old Athlon XP.

The best results on the old Socket A platform usually come from the Mobile versions of the 2500+ or 2600+ that are available for under 100$ at New Egg.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-436&depa=0

I have the 2500+ version running at 2.4GHZ with 1.7v, 2.5GHZ with 1.8v and 2.6GHZ with 1.9v using a Thermalright SP-97 and a 80MM Tornado on a DFI Lan Party. I also run it at 250+FSB with some Geil PC4000 memory, most average motherboards can only reach 210-215FSB.

As a note, the new 90NM Winchester core (Socket 939) for AMD 64's have been reported to be getting up in the 2.7-2.8GHZ range with top of the line air cooling

Yes, my multiplier is unlocked, because i can change both FSB and Multiplier. Earlier ive reached the 2.7GHZ but when ran the CPU Stability test and the PCMARK04 the system reboots and system failure. I will try what you said. Thanks.

Very sweet post Necro, bling to ya.

One thing I would like to add about the mobile chips is the stepping.

Currently people are getting MUCH better results from the "I" stepped cores over the "A" stepped cores. When I say better, I mean like 100mhz better.

Right now (as far as I know) newegg is only shipping the "AQYHA" cores. Either way though, its the luck of the draw. While I LOVE newegg for most of my pc shopping, if your a serious overclocker you want the exact stepping you have been researching.

Excaliberpc offers a guarantee on their stepping.

http://www.excaliberpc.com/product_i...oducts_id=4329

Linkage to an IQYHA stepping 2600+M for $110.

Hey guys, so far i tried 210 x 12 and its been stable. Its just getting really hot its up to 50C idle and 55-58 load that's with a 2100rpm on my HSF. I can put the fan on 3500rpm its kinda noisy but it will put the temp on a very acceptable temperature. I know its not safe for the CPU to get hotter than 55 and above. Im just waiting for my last two paychecks so i can get me the danger den TDX watercooling kit. I think for now im going to leave it as it is so when i get the watercooling kit i can push it more.

As of now here is what i got:
210 x 12 = 2520 MHZ
1.70V
Tell me what you guys think.

sounds good so far, and yah temps should don't get all too high, just try to keep the fan up to speed and keep it cooled enough until you can scrape together enough for a WC setup, just a hint, for a little more cooling, if you have any fans in the back of the computer, make sure that they are facing out, to blow the air out, and keep the PC near a well vented area , such as a window or near one, that extra bit goes along way!

thanks for the tip, by the way i just ordered a different Heat sink for my system for now. I should be getting it in 2 days and will be installed at the same day. I ordered the thermalright SI-97. I will use this Heat sink until i have enough money for the Watercooling setup. I'll let you know what temps ill get with the new HS.

hey all after getting my computer overclocked. I noticed something weird. Everytime i have to shutdown my system it takes forever to get the prompt from windows. It never happened before. Is there something wrong with my system. I tried to increase my Vcore but no change. It just made my CPU hotter.

As of now i have:
210 x 12 = 2520MHZ
1.75V core

Default AMD 3200+ @ 2.5GHZ STARTUP and SHUTDOWN problem.

Hey all i got question. I overclocked my AMD AthlonXP 3200+ to (2.5GHZ). And now its taking at least 3-4 minutes before it shutdown. And now i replace my Heat sink (Thermalright SI-97). Everytime i turn on my pc it will stay on POST for about 3-4minutes before it does the Memory test, HD test and Windows start up. And it does the same thing on shutdown. Has anyone have any resolution to this or encounter this kind of problem. HEELLLPP!!!

I am thinking you will need to turn the FSB down a bit. But I am also wondering which fan you are using on the SI-97 and what voltage you have set for your RAM.

Well i actually put the FSB and the Multiplier back to stock. Just to see if there's any changes. I also set the RAM Voltage and the VCore on Auto and set almost everything on defaults. No change. What else do u think might cause it. Anyway i added pics of the HS and the fan i used with it.

Hmm I don't know then. But regarding your HSF, you really should use a 92mm fan with a goofd CFM rating and ditch the copper CPU shim unless you are really paranoid about cracking the CPU die.

Unhappy

Well as of now im getting 39C on IDLE and 43-45C on LOAD. I use to have 44C IDLE and 51C LOAD. So it was good improvement. Oh by the way the fan is only on 2000rpm. If I adjust the fan speed to 3500rpm, it goes down to 35C IDLE and 42C LOAD. Thats a big drop. I keep the fan from the CoolerMaster Aero because of the fan speed knob so i can control the speed when i need it in full load or put in low speed on idle if i want it to be quiet. The CPU Shim can stay coz' its recommended anyway. But im not sure what else is going on with this PC.

what is your ambient temp.

I use the athlon xp 3000 o/c to 191x13 (stock 166x13).
My ambient is 75-80F and even o/c running prime95 i never hit 44C. However my athlon xp 3200 htpc load is now 43-44 after doing ductwork. It used to be 49 and that is underclocked. But its in a cabinate and everything is designed around noise. Ill try tossing the 3200 in my desktop machine which has the 3000 and i will see what temps i get outa curiosity.

i use si97 with the tornado fan. I wouldent recomend it unless you got good speakers to cover the noise.

i dont mean to sound like a idiot but you did remeber to put on the thermal greese? I have seen people forget. (Raises his hand with embarasment.)

well my ambient is around 70-80F. Well so far my temp is fine for me and i can raise the fan speed if i wanted to. I will use this for now till i get my WC set up and yes i do have thermal grease in it.

Sounds like you might have borked Windows...

Did you have any BSOD's, random reboots or crashing during your Overclocking adventures?

Windows doesn't like being run in unstable situations, and sometimes looses important files

Have you run Defrag lately? one of my first clues is that sometimes certain files will no longer defrag.

If you have put it back to near stock settings and it is still "Stalling" as you have stated above, then it might be time for a HD format and a reinstall of Windows

This happened to me a while back during some oc testing on my 2800+ Barton.........Try using the "System Restore" to the day prior to your oc'ing.................that's what helped me........
