Default Is it really worth it?

I've been doing a little reading about overclocking and now I am wondering if overclocking my rig is really worth it. I have a 2800+ athlon. Would it really be worth it for me to try this out? My proccessor is already running at a high of 50 degrees celcius. With a SLk-947U HSF (It's been pretty hot and humid lately) I'm just pondering about wether or not I will see a difference if I do start overclocking.

If thats 50 idle, i wouldnt push it much, mainly becuase when you geti nto the 65-75 @ oc vcores, that will sorter the life span or your processor.

depends on how far you plan on overclocking. what games you play, and what all you use your computer on. i say yes it is worth it, but your cooling better be up to the challenge, and if you are already running 50c then i would look at case cooling, what fan you have on your processor and what not.....

The first question would be whether or not you need the performance. The second would be whether or not you care about performance and just want to overclock for the thrill. Third is do you have the money to replace any equipment if something unexpected happens?

Awesome, good to see somebody's comp sucks as much as mine. Given, I'm running a 3200+, but that's the twist --- It's underclocked. I've had so many cooling problems I gave up and now it runs smoothly. She's running at 1.98ghz and I don't notice much in my games.

If you ask me, a DIY well-cooled case is just as impressive as a decent overclock. Of course , often these go hand in hand, but I guess I've just been thinking about cooling my case so much that anything as far as that goes impresses me.

I've never seen a problem with the proccessor or anything the only real problem I have is with the anti-aliasing. when you turn it up all the way it lags like f*** I guess that would mean I need a better video card than a 9800 pro but I really can't tell what anti-aliasing does so... who really cares one way or the other. I was just looking for something to do with my not being at school or work or playing vidie-uh games time. Also, what's wrong with a 2800 and a 3200? suck? You mean you would rather run a peice of crap 64 bit shiz machine? The ones at school make my pentium 900 look fast.

Cpt. Dave,

Which program will lag with AA on using a 9800??

FYI AA smooths out the edges in 3D-land. Fire up UT2K4 and load an indoor level where there are some railings. Look at the railing: it's all jagged. Turning AA on will 1. decrease performance slightly, but 2, will make all those jagged edges smooth again...lemme see if I can find a link to screenshots...I'll edit later...

Here's a good example:

Notice the concrete barrier at the right of the race track...in the left pic it's all jagged where in the right pic it's smoothed out. The blown-up section gives a good example too.

Sorry, best pic I could find on short notice...usually video card reviews will have comparison screen shots between different AA levels.

Sorry for the threadjack...back to your regularly scheduled overclocking-theme related thread...

ah sorry, I was just suggesting that mine's a little faster, so probably hotter. Of course, my underclocked machine's probably running as fast as yours. I think both of our systems can take most games pretty well, so no real NEED to oveclock. Ours, to me, are both still on the high-end part of the spectrum and so we don't need to OC like some others do.

EDIT: looking back at my post, the suck was referring to our temps.

Pimp, I see the picture, and it is pretty and a good example. But when you are gaming are you noticing those jaggies?
I know I don't, and I play my games at a 800x600 resolution. To each his own I guess.

Time to laugh at me now I know.

And the answer to your lag question is "Thief 3: Deadly shadows"

Never played Thief, so I can't give you any input on how it's supposed tp perform...My guess is that it's a pretty demanding game...

Personally, a smooth experience means more to me than smooth lines, so I typically don't use AA or AF...if I had the horepower on my card I'd use it for sure though...

I'm running a 9500 Pro...
