Default Drilling MOBO

im in a bit of a pickle, because of a dead abit board, I had to buy a nice shiny new motherboard quite recently, an MSI KT6 Delta, purely because it was on the Shelf in PC World and it was in my budget (ie half of fux0r all). Only now have i realised that it is a great OC board, apart from one small thing stopping me from realising my ultimate rig (a watercooled pelt, just to see if i can) have you ever heard of anyone successfully drilling holes in a motherboard, or will i have to stop being such a miserable git and buy a new board, (and put the old one to use in a F@H cruncher)
let me know and just tell me if i have used too much epoxy and my brain has melted...

considering a motherboard is a multilayer, insanely complex piece of technology, i would honestly be surprised and impressed if you managed to drill a 1mm wide hole in it w/o killing it.

Yep, you can drill a mobo quite successfully ... it won't _work_ afterwards, but they're easy to drill through

ooook = first off you do not buy anything from PC world - they rip you off £20 to begin with then proceed to smile at you sweetly, knowing full well u just gave them their hourly pay.

I recommend Ebuyer next time you need anything.

anyway to the topic - errr quite frankly no there isnt a chance in hell u could do that and get away with it. just looking round my board, there are over 50 odd data lines id hit from drilling through the first layer! and considering theres either 4 or 6 layers in a board, you havent got a chance.

there are plenty of socket clips and adapters out there for large scale coolers, simply hooking them over the block and locking them onto the socket clips. If you cant find any then make you own! its only a bit of steal or AL bend into place with 3 holes either side to lock on

If you really need to break it, I recommend a hammer or a shotgun. drills just don't do enough damage.

what about pouring water on it while its running? that might be more interesting, and then you can still shoot it with a shotgun.

Actually Kruta I did that, except it was done with distilled water and I was able to turn it off as soon as I saw it.

Default crack pipe mobo

yeah, i thought that was some whacked out sheeit, must have been hitting the crack pipe a bit hard when i wrote that, thats teh best thing about this forum, you guys are honest, and can always think of a better way to kill something. the only reason i bought at PC world is my visa is maxxed out and i needed the board straight away.

somehow i dont think i will be drilling that board, its a pretty good one. Might try it on an old junker, just to see if it can be done....

See y'all round.

ok i get that(i took chemistry yay), its still hard to believe. could this actually be used as a nonconductive fluid cooling method?

'fraid not, distilled water will absorb CO2 from the air rendering it slightly acidic, (Carbonic Acid) not the best thing for the tracks on your mobo, i think it ranks way, way, way, below drilling tho.

Hope You guys dont think im a total spaz, just had to ask.

Actually, you are not the first to ask that question. It comes up every so often. I usually advise people to get a hole saw and do it that way. I was just to slow on the draw for this thread.

yes you can drill holes, very few dual athlon boards have mounting holes for WC so often times dually enthusiasts drill their mb, might wanna check 2cpu.com they have a bunch of threads about it over there
