Are you talking about on the pin side of the cpu? If so be super careful and just clean it off with water and a cotton swab. If its on the core side just do the same but either way make sure the cpu is good and dry before you use it. Air dry that is.

Roger that, That sticker won't hurt a thing unless it keeps you up at night knowing it's somewhere there under your heat-sink

Yup, use an old business card and spread it out paper thin.

All it is supposed to do is fill in the air pockets.

Perfect metal on silicon is the perfect thermal joint. But neither will ever be perfect, so there will always be small imperfections that without thermal paste, will make air pockets. The goop just fills them in, that's all. Too much and it will insulate the chip and hurt your cooling.

I never told him that was "good" but this is his first attempt at it. I didnt see any reason to tell him to put foreign materials in contact with his cpu till he gets some experience under his belt. Not that he cant handle it,I just think its best not to give a noob advice that could potentially cause a problem. I agree, and I would normally spread it out as thin as possible with a card of some sort but using the amount I specified, the HSF will spread it out nicely enough for his first build.Once he gets it up and running then he can start to refine his build and learn the differences first hand.

i understand what your trying to do. but dont you think that if would be nice for him to learn earley.an the right way to do it? you actually gave him advise that could hurt him in the long run or maybe short time. but once again i understand what you mean by it.

Your exactly right, which I personally feel is the best way for him to learn, that is to learn to tweak on his own, with a little help from others of course.I just feel that there is really no way to to truly learn the benefits of one way as opposed to the other without seeing and doing it first hand. This will also give his mind the chance to think of new possibilities and what ifs as he sees what other "what ifs" other people have stumbled upon.

It was a good idea though to let him know that he should have done so.Maybe he will take his HSF off and re-apply his tim and see for himself.
