Default AMD 64 Bit System Selection Help Needed

Yo PIMPS,

I got a break...someone wants to buy my current system...this will give me money to lUPGRADE to a AMD 64 bit system.

Questions: WHAT is the best 64 bit cpu for overclocking that does NOT cost $700.00. I am leaning towards a AMD 64 3200+ for about $247.00. Any thoughts??? What is the difference between a Opteron 240 and an AMD Athlon 64 3200+?

For the motherboard, nVidia has released the nForce3 250, the successor to the nForce3 150;

http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/sh...ml?i=2009&p=13

This article says the that NOW we can lock the pci/agp bus on nForce3 mobos and

"If you are an overclocker, then nForce3-250 may be your only choice for a working AGP lock - assuming production motherboards follow through."

The only offering that I could find for an nForce3 mobo was a Chaintech ZNF3-250 ZENITH selling for $195.00, has anyone found any ABIT boards?

http://www.chaintechusa.com/tw/eng/p...o=13&PISNo=266

Is this nForce 250 board worth an extra $100.00 more than an nForce 150 board? And what does "WeÂ’ve been told that things will get really exciting for nForce3 250 once Socket 939 hits" mean?? The "socket 939" part, I mean...I thought this was socket 939?

What is the best recommended memory for this system? I read somewhere "If you're an AMD user I'd have to suggest you get something with Winbond BH-5 DRAM. They allow you to run tighter timings which is just as important in the AMD world."

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.c...id=1143&page=6

Too bad that we cannot use DDR2 ram here, huh?

Finally, can I mod a Thermalright SLK-947-U to fit on this 64 bit cpu??? I know that the Thermalright SLK-948 is fully compatible.

PIMPS...please just drop off a tidbit here and there.

i have the 3200 and i think its the best value for your money. you get the 1mb cache and you can easily oc it to 3400 speeds (i did it with a 1 degree temp difference) and its cheaper than the 3400.

i personally would wait for other companies to start using the 250, just cuz chaintec doesnt really excite me in the mobo category. and itll be cheaper.

by the way, what are the stats on your current system? i might be interested

First off the opteron is a 940 pin not a 754.. The opteron is designed for servers and will not perform as well as the 3200+.. Opteron requires registered memory..The best cooler for the 64 would have to be the Zalman coolers...

Edit:: I think you need to do more reserch on the nforce 3 boards compared to the kt800 boards...

biohazardpc....duh, isn't more pins better? lol! I saw the kt800 board reviews but I understood that they do not unlock the multi and are not very overclockable...that is the hooplah associated with the nForce 250 chipset...it overclocks better.

No more pins are not always better...If you want more pins then go for the fx model.. The opteron is not designed for desktop pc's and will not perform well at all in them...And if you are goign to be rude when people try to give you some help then why bother asking in the first place.. Do the reserch on your own..

WHAT are you talking about??? I KNOW more pins are not necessarily better...I said that as a joke...didn't you see the "lol"??

Even if I was serious, my comments were NOT rude! How can a statement of fact be rude??? My "rude" response:

"I saw the kt800 board reviews but I understood that they do not unlock the multi and are not very overclockable...that is the hooplah associated with the nForce 250 chipset...it overclocks better."

WHAT is RUDE about this statement???

You need to drop that chip on your shoulders! But I DO APOLGIZE if my humor/words were taken out of context!

I anxiously waited for a reply from you guys...look at my response times. THanks for your help anyway. And I DO do my own research...I always provide links to back up what I say...I am NOT lazy, I just like the ADVICE and additional input from the knowledgeable people I find in this forum!

Bye

None of the regular a64 chips have unlocked multipliers just the fx models.. It does not matter if you get a nforce 3 board or a kt800 board wiht 754 pins will only be able to bump up the whole fsb..Truthfully if you want a great overcloker then you will have to go with a fx model.. The reg models can be overclocked a litttle(200-400 mhz) but nothing drastic in my opinion..

Unlike the XPs that had a quick job done to them to lock em, the AMD64s are locked tighter than P4s.

Why? They're finally making money after they started locking their processors. They are a company after all.

These days with multipliers for the masses will be over soon... so take pictures to show to your grand children some day.

Mr. biohazardpc

I sure am GLAD to see another response from you! Great Day in 'de Mornin' !

I think that I do not want to spend the money necessary to buy a fx model...almost double...not to mention the cost of "registered memory". I will get a 3200+ for about $260 and be happy.

REF: "The reg models can be overclocked a litttle(200-400 mhz) but nothing drastic in my opinion"

Will this still apply with the new nForce3 250 chipset???
See Article; http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/s...tml?i=2009&p=13

Thanks again,
Jazz
