Default 64x2 help??

Im having some problems getting my ath 64 x2 4000+ to run stable with any decent clock. I used to only be able to get it to 2.2ghz and acutally run stable through all of my tests then i figured to switch my 8pin power connector on the motherboard to the 4pin and im now able to run stable at 2.4ghz my tems are around 31C idle 35C load. right now my settings are 230 fsb cpu multi is 10.5 ht link is 1150 ht multi is 5x cpuv 1.38 i cant push the v core any higher or the fsb any higher even if i lower my clock multi or htlink multi otherwise i get my overclock failed message. right now im running on the asus m3a2n mvp deluxe wifi with amd790fx chipset. anyone have a similar problem?

Above 220-230FSB, your going to run into issues with the 5X HTT causing instability.

Id try running the 11X multiplier and see if that doesnt give you some more headroom.

What happens if you return the bios to default or near default..and just try changing HTT or Multi? still get a no boot condition when you do them individually?

oftne times its the combo of settings that lead to a no boot situation.

10x multi with 4x HTT 240FSB (2.4ghz) and not touching your ram, will probably not boot...most DDR 400 won't run comfortably at DDR480 speeds.

But use a ram divider that keeps your ram speed near 200MHZ probably would.

Alternatively, adding more voltage (2.8v for example) and looser timings (3-4-4-8) might allow your ram to boot, just depends on what ya got for chips inside it.

Most Samsung TCCD will run DDR480~DDR500 (240~250FSB) speeds with the above settings or beyond, I had some GSKILL skill that was rated to run DDR600 (300FSB)right out of the box 3-4-4-8 2T and 2.8v, or they could run DDR400 (200FSB) at 2-2-2-5.

I also had some Kingston Hyper X DDR 360 (180FSB) that had the legendary Winbond BH-5 chips that could run up to DDR540 (270FSB) using 2-2-2-7 timings, but required a massive 3.4v to get there, most other chips die at anything above 2.8~3v, so don't try that unless you KNOW you have BH-5

Also sounds like you have some headroom for increasing CPU voltage, typically up to 1.5v is tolerable (With good air cooling) on those CPU's as long as temps under load stay at 50c or less.

There may be other voltage setting you need to run at higher fsb speeds, such as the NB (NorthBridge) SB (South Bridge) and HTT voltage.

That is why I suggest going back to the highest multiplier you can before going any further, you won't need to push the FSB so hard (You can play around with things like that later once your find your TRUE max CPU speed) what is the stock one? 11x?

stock clock multi is 10.5x i have noticed that if my processor even touchs 40c my computer locks up in windows i did manage to get it to about 2.4ghz stable but only for a hour if that and all i would be running is cs1.6 with the cpu stock i hit around 37c under full load for about a hour or so. one thing i did was change out the 8pin power plug for the motherboard to the 4pin and it started working a lot better it killed all of those overclock failed flags but now if i take my cpu voltage over 1.38v or my ram v over 1.9v it fails. idk its pretty odd i spent about 4 hours one day with a pen and pad of paper adjusting everything i could think of i also cant change the htt multi or the ram devider in the bios but i can change the htt multi in amd overdrive.

im wondering if it could be my power supply or ram holding me back on this right now im running a antec earthwatts 500watt ps and i have 2 gig 4x512mb ddr2 pc6400(800mhz) ram its from wintec ive herd good things about that ram but it was dirt cheap im not sure which chips it has on it either

LOL..OOPS! I was thinking you had socket 939, your running AM-2 with DDR-2!

What motherboard are you using and what are you monitoring temps with?

Is the Bios up to date? sometimes they adjust the temp monitoring to be more accurate with an update (I use Winflash to update, see my sig for a link)

40c is awful low for a crash...usually around 55c is what it takes.

You might try just using 2 Sticks for max OCin'g purposes, 4 sticks can be quite a bit harder to OC with.

Your PSU has enough power for your rig, unless your running a GX-2 or something that sucks major power.

I don't know much about your PSU specifically, might want to read the customer reviews on new egg about it's reliabilty/stability.

You might want to just stick to stable settings in the Bios, and use the AMD OD to push it up a few notches.

You can catch me on MSN at patdelaney36@yahoo.com, I have a mic too for V-Chat, maybe we can figure out what the hell is going on!

alrighty added you! ya i dont get it either maybe its some voltage issue with the board or something but ive tried a few different bios releases including the newest one and its still the same thing. the only thing that has made a differenece is the power connector for the motherboard power instead of using the 4pin 12v connector i tried the 8pin and when i did that i couldnt oc it at all. when i used the 4 pin one i could a little bit but then once it hit around 40C it would reboot if i was doing too much idk?

K..got you add for MSN today

That sounds like the reverse of what should be happening, one would think the 8 pin would work better then the 4!

Do you have a place to put Molex on the board too? My old DFI LP had one to augment the 4pin P-4 connector, it added major stability while OC'ing, was rough without it!

Instead of me asking a ton of individual questions, how bout posting your complete hardware specs such as Motherboard and PSU, etc...in one shot. Include the model numbers if you know them.

Also a few screenies of CPUZ (Main page, Ram) GPUZ (Video card) and Speed fan, I opened them up on my desktop and took this shot.

EDIT: Ugh..it doesn't show much detail...the forums have changed, you used to be able to make the entire image show up in the post full sized..now it looks all garbled.

It realy sounds like you have some power supply issues going on during the OC, but it's hard to nail down sometimes, Antec is usually pretty reliable.

Here is the ss so far here are my specs.
CPU: amd athlon64 x2 4000+
Motherboard: asus m3a32-MVP Deluxe *AMD 790fx chipset. Southbridge AMD sb600
Ram 2GIG wintec ddr2 pc6400*800mhz* 4x512mb sticks.
PSU: Antec earthwatts 500watt ps.
GPU: Radeon x600se.

It shouldnt be that demanding although when i have been monitoring my voltages on speed fan my 12v rail is running at 11.97v do you think that could be the culprit?

Here is a ss of some stuffs.

Ok i took about another 3 hours of tweaking and adjusting every setting in my bios i can now pull a stable 240fsb at 2.5ghz. i think the reason my motherboard was oben box is i think something is loose in the motherboard power connector i hooked that 8pin connector back up and it seemed like 1 pin might be loose but after that i can finally hit 240fsb and its running stable no more lockups or anything my 12v rail is still 11.97v and i think the only thing holding me back now is the ram i have im going to try 2 stikcs and do some more tweaking and see what more i can squeeze out of it.

I got the pi times to 30 on 1m. Ya the 8pin power connector started to have me worried and i started to think well maybe the board got rmad because of a bad pin in the connector or something well i got the 8pin connector working and going great lol. but after i reseated the power connector a few times i just took it step by step changing things little by little and i got it lol.
